i have a line on an older style (with treads) cat trax. 1 of the tires has about a 4 inch split in the sidewall. the split follows the curve of the tire..ie not a gash/slash.
would a cat trax inner tube work in this tire or would the tube just pop out of the split.
thanks.

Worth a try, patch the gash with several bicycle tube repair patches (or one large one if you can swing it). I would probably give florida sailcraft an e-mail with a pic and they can probably advise you better.

Hand sew the split with really heavy thread or fishing line. Then use inner tube material to protect the new
tube from the sewn area.

I really like the idea of stitching it! You might have to use a drill to make the holes though! Whipping twine would probably be the best for the job!

I have noticed that these tire are made by Carlisle Tire and Wheel - http://www.carlisletire.com - You may find that tire on this website and just be able to replace it. Good Luck.

I used one of those large curved leather working needles and a pair of pliers. Worked great.

I found the smooth no-tread tires here
http://www.carlisletire.c…rators/smooth/index.html
But it doesn't look like the exact size is listed. They have 20 (tall) x 10 (wide) x 10 (wheel) but aren't the smooth ones on the CatTrax 21 x 10 x 8 ?
Could someone look at theirs to be sure?

thanks for all the replies.
florida sailcraft lists the cat trax as 21" diameter by 12" wide so carlisletire prolly won't work. i think i'll try the tire patch idea first. i know i good tire shop that can help me too.
thanks again for the ideas.

You said you were looking to repair the old style tread type.
Look here: http://www.carlisletire.c…/at101chevron/index.html The AT101 Chevron is a treaded 21" x 12". I know the old style is (was) made by Carlisle - its on the side of the tire (Damon I saw this on yours). This Chevron might not be the exact one but the dimensions are right.
I dont think Carlisle makes the new smooth tire. Be nice if they did - they are a customer of mine - may pick up some!!

This MAY very well be the Smooth Tire sold by Florida Sail Craft. I only found 1 retailer (other than FSC) and they are $59 for the tire. FSC is $55. This one is made by Cheng Shin.

The old style the tire was no different not just the tread. there was no aluminum hub or wheel for the tire. It was all one piece. I am not sure how you would put a tube in it. I think they were filled like a basket ball with a pin. The new tire were on an aluminum wheel. The old set I bought for $30 had the old style and one would hold air but was split very bad you are describing. I order new tires with rims from Florida Sailcraft and it was the best money I have spent on the boat so far. Cost about $250 for the tires with rims shipped from Florida to Utah. Keep the delrin bearings off yours they will last forever. i hit mine with sailkote before I packed them in the new wheels. You canl order new cotter pins and washers at the same time if you think you might need them, they were not much.

Correct! The old style sidewalls were integrated with the hubs. Now Damon, I am wondering about your set. You have treaded tires but they are mounted on rims - right? I recall seeing Carlisle on the sidewall. Or am I just going nuts here. I think the AT101 i linked to above would be the replacement for your tire - a rimmed, treaded tire.
Definately order the cotter pins. Even the slightest bend or separatio in the tip make it a bear to get it through the second hole of the axle.

Yes, I think there have been three generations of CatTrax, the first with the one-piece tire/rim/needle-valve, then they went to 8 inch aluminum rims with real valves and treaded ATV tires, then the smooth treadless tires.
I did some Googling to see if there were any alternatives.
The Cheng Shin tires you had
http://www.cedarrapidstir…-shin-smooth_slick-tires
Another place that has them a little less, $51.67
http://www.smalltires.com…1-40ee-84c0-58e2fcc88dd2
Some Nanco tires the same size, also $59
http://www.highwingllc.com/tires.html
Those Nanco tires on eBay for $32.99 (but $25 shipping)
http://cgi.ebay.com/21X12…O-30151002-/170637296051
Same Nanco tires (N800) from Tires Unlimited ($48.51 bottom of the page)
http://www.tiresunlimited…om/nankang_atv_tires.htm
When I was looking around I found these things used for lawn mowers, ATV's, and even experimental Airplanes!

Looks like you could save a few $ on the Nanco from Ebay, depending on the freight from Florida Sail Craft. But then, I like supporting those businesses that are good to the sport. So the difference doesnt look worth the change.
Damon, thanks for your research!

I have a set of cat trax with the exact same problem. I drilled a hole in each tire and squirted some tire sealant from the auto parts store in, then plugged the hole with a tire hole repair kit. Cost me $20 and the tires hold enough air to move the boat around the beach, they need to be pumped up right before putting the boat on. In my case the sidewall on one tire is severally rotted and the other tire is leaking where the needle valve enters the tire.
I think my best bet is to buy new tires, they are still cheaper than a new set of Cat Trax. Unfortunately none of the Ebay tires are actually cheaper as you still need the hub and inner tube to retrofit them onto an older set of tires. -

Man !! you guys are amazing! Many thanks to all!
My "line" turned out to be no good. The split turned out to be longer than I was told and the other tire had dry rot. They have the Firestone logo on them so I'm guessing they are the first generation. I will check with FSC to see if the blue TigerTrax will work because I'm not on sand.
