Hey all,
I just picked up a Nacra 5.2 in Denver Co for $400. I was amazed to discover that it was all good with the exception of an older tramp and no jib bridle. Can anyone share pics of what the jib bridle should look like and lengths? I made two 4' wires with adjustments that work, but it would be excellent to know what I should have made.
I'm also thinking that refinishing my hulls this winter is a good idea. Any advice on that front?
Thanks
Jon

best thing i did when getting my 5.2 was
search the forums for "nacra 5.2" threads
copy and save lots of text
google the web for info and pics
saved lots of that
search for videos etc etc etc
this should be a pic of the bridle-forestay junction
http://www.thebeachcats.c…ictures/?g2_itemId=72059
for refinishing i sanded off the oxidized gelcoat with 1000 grit paper and lots of water, then polished to a dull shine with a cutting compound -

You can also end the bridals in thimbles, (if your budget is tight, they are cheaper than marine eyes), then a bow shackle connects to the forestay.
Murrays will make them up according to factory specs, I see they don't list the length. Look around here for all kinds of rigging.

If you have a local rigger in mind, one of the 5.2 owners should be able to give you a "pull to pull" measurement.

I have a 5.2 on the beach in Longmont, if you need to check out any of the rigging.

i've just stumbled upon a stash of nacra 5.2 stuff, mainly decals, stickers and badges
on the other side of the world from you all
and am thinking of the best way to make them available...
what about; 1 cloth badge, 2 blue/white "nacra" stickers, 2 medium sized red or blue "nacra 5.2" stickers and 2 large red or blue "nacra 5.2" hull decals for a $15 paypal payment
http://www.thebeachcats.c…590&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
about $5 of that will cover cheapest postage
$5 i will paypal to damon as a beachcats donation
and the other $5 will buy me a premium beer;o)
the stickers look like new but need to test the hull decals to see if they still work after 20 years...
http://www.thebeachcats.c…ictures/?g2_itemId=81566
the other parts that i'll probably use or keep are
late model style boom, rudder tubes with akerman bend, 4 beam caps, old style alloy spreader, deck set for 1 hull....................so i'll also end up with an old boom and 2 straight rudder tubes but can't think sending them OS would be cost effective

Eric, if you can get them to the Narita Hilton, I can pick them up & bring them to this side of the world free. From here they could be shipped cost effective to Canada or the States

I was wondering if it was possible to put it on the beach at Union. I can't decide if I want the convenience (and wakes) of Boulder reservoir or if I want the drive and pleasant nature of Union reservoir. Do you have to belong to the boat club to get on the beach or do I talk to the gate folks?
I also use a little flying advice. I've been a big cat sailor for years but you I've never been tempted to fly the hull in a 50 foot cruiser.

If you change your mind on the beam caps I'm your buyer. My 10 year old son has decided that it's fun to take the Trapeze wire to the bow and swing around to the stern but when he misses the metal ends of the aft beam does a number on his shins. Luckily that hasn't stopped him yet.
Alternatively does anyone know of a source for replacement beam caps for the 5.2. I've read they don't make them anymore. -

Jon,
I can't comment on where to put the boat in but I can comment on flying a hull. For the first little while make sure you sit near the rear beam and keep your crew just aft of the daggerboard. You will drag the transoms a bit but that is better than stuffing the bows until you get used to the boat.
Flying the hull is usually a transient thing with the 5.2 when you are beginning, you go up and then drop ralatively quickly. The goal is to keep the windward hull just above the water so you aren't heeling too badly but you get rid of the drag from the hull.
Wear gloves! When reaching or beating keep the mainsheet uncleated and one or two loops of mainsheet wrapped around your hand. If you fly too high (45 degrees to the water), release a loop or two and you will drop immediately. Keeping a hull above the water consistently requires a bit of a tightrope balancing act, small smooth changes to the mainsheet and your position are the key, the minute you quickly dump sheet the hull will drop. You will also likley find that you will feel uncomfotably high even though you are just getting the hull out of the water that is something to get used to. You can also recover from when the hull goes up really high by dumping sheet and hiking out. Keep that butt near the edge of the hull and your feet under the straps so you can adjust the balance easly.
Hope that helps.
And this is officially my 1000th post!!! I am now a Chief Muahahahaha. Back to your regularly scheduled forum. :)
