Hobie 18 spinnaker snuffer ring?  Bottom

  • Where can I buy a spinnaker snuffer ring and bag for my hobie 18? I would like to try and find a stainless steel one but I have no luck so far?
  • There is no specific snuffer ring/bag setup for a H18. Keep that in mind. You have a few options:

    1) Find a used one-I got a ring and bag, plus a bunch of other gear for $200
    2) Buy a Nacra or Hobie F18 ring and bag, total $500 (ring alone is like $250)
    3) Buy a SNU ring and bag, also >$500
    4) Get in touch with an AHPC dealer and see what they'll do for you, they make an aluminum ring.

If you can find a ring for ~$100, you could sew the bag yourself for cheap. Keep in mind that the spinnaker alone could easily run you >$500 depending on exactly what you manage to find.

  • Get a snu! Will be my next unit

making a sock is a tricky task. if you are a seamstress i guess it's easy but i have seen some terrible home-made ones (from guys who know how to sew) I have also seens ome decent ones.

I have a AHPC ring/sock works well. they are pricey.

If you want to talk with a dealer.. PM me for Jill Nickerson contact info (they are the South USA dealers)
  • Is there any why I could make one? Or has that ever been done before?
  • we sailed with a guy who had a pvc homemade hoop, and the worst looking mesh sock you have ever seen. It looked like a toilet bowl and he got a lot of grief over it... however it worked and he used it till he shredded his spin.

  • Ok well I've decided to buy the SNU snuffer ring and bag. But I want to make my own spinnaker pole out of aluminum. I'm going to use one that is 11.5 to 12 feet long that is an 1.5inch in diameter. I just don't what the wall thickness should be
  • .120 is plenty thick and cheaper than ,083 or .065 there is a snuffer ring in the classifieds now at half the cost of the snu

  • Don't use .120 wall thickness, way to thick and heavy. You want .065. Find yourself a sunfish boom, it's .065 and already anodized and meets your length requirements.

  • The cost difference is $75 when I quoted it last week. .065 would be about 6 pounds .120 about 11 pounds . I would rather spend the $75 on something else considering we are talking about a hobie 18. That's if used material doesn't work out.

  • I've got an alum pole off an F18HT. I also have experience with SNU snuffers.

  • Thanks for the info on the pipe. Is there anywhere I can find pics for setting up the rigging for the spinnaker pole.
  • A sunfish spar or something similar is a great pole. Or a used windsurfer mast works too.
