I have seen several posts where people contemplating repairs wondered what was holding things together.
I put up an album in Tech Tips that shows whats inside early (non foam cored) Nacra hulls. This particular boat is a 70's 5.2, however it seems very similar to my '84 5.7

Excellent job! Thanks for posting the pictures and also the descriptions, makes it a lot easier for members in the future to figure things out.
Your rudder system looks like a Hobie 18, you can tell if it's the newer "post 1987" upgraded system by whether it has plastic rudder cams and also the upper casting tiller tube will be straight. The newer castings are much better because of the replaceable cams.

great pics Ed,
looks like the lower nacra stainless rudder gudgeon bracket was removed to allow that hobie casting to fit on and then an alloy hobie fitting was mounted to hold the lower end....and i think on my 1882 5.2 the little allow drain tubes under the bulkheads are not present, but simply are larger opening between the bulkhead and hull keel -

Those are some great pics thanks!
I actually used roofing screws to attach my tramp rails
Does make it a little dangerous for wet suits, but worked great considering I didn't know how or what I was attaching too.
I have something loose in my passenger side front bow. Any idea what it might be?

hopefully not a stringer or a compression tube
but i can't think what else it could be!
can you get it down to the bulkhead opening for a look for fgeel by finger
or do you have the tubes? -

My '84 5.7 also does not have a tube. The boat in the photos was from the 70's, I can't make out the exact year as the transom had a repair done at some point. It is one of the early models where the transom was inset about 1" into the hull, rather than flush.
How "big" does the loose piece seem? If it is something small rattling around, it could be a nut, rivet or fitting from a beam strap that came loose, & found its way through the drain into the forward portion of the hull. It could be a dropped part that has been there since day one. The only fittings forward of that bulkhead are bridal wire fittings.
If it sounds like something larger, it is probably a piece of the tubing. This boat was a beater, & there were several areas where the secondary layers had come loose from the gelcoat/first layer. A few places the tubes had come loose, & most of the cardboard tubing was water soaked.
Push on the hull, if a significant piece has come loose, you should be able to feel a soft place, where the hull will oilcan. If all feels well, just believe it's a trunk monkey & drive on!

It sounds like it is a piece of 2x4x4.
There is a crack indentation about 2 feet up from the front crossbeam mid pontoon.
I don't have access ports forward, just the original ones at the back of each pontoon.

Barring something from the X files that lives in there, it has to be a stringer tube that has come loose. The tubes are mostly to stiffen the structure. If it were my boat, & there were no large soft oil canny (is that a word?) area, I would be inclined to let sleeping dogs lie. That is going on the theory that most structures are designed so that the failure of one small item does not result in catastrophic failure of the entire system.
You really can't cut a port in front of the beam.
If you really want to fix it, you could remove the front deck, & resin the loose part back in place. There is a thread with some good photos here that shows someone removing a deck. My buddy who just bought the Nacra 36 is an aerospace engineer, with extensive knowledge of composites. He pulled out two plastic wedges & a putty knife & showed me how easy it is to remove the deck. He demoed it on the front portion of the hull that was torn loose, the same piece I used for the photos. You can see from the photo what is involved, & how it needs to be separated if you chose that route.
How far away are you, I could ship you the 5' section to practice on. If I cut the top part off, it would only be a flat package, unless you can think of what to do with a 5' piece, maybe build a small ama? Hell, I can send you a full left hull to beat on.
PS My wife thinks I've gone mad, what with this N36 thing... I told her be glad it's an N36 thing, not a 36C thing, after all I'm at that midlife crisis stage. If this is a crisis, it's the best damn fun I've had in years! My buddy wants me to come sail the 36, because I have Cat experience, Holy Sh*t, can we say the blind leading the blind...fools rush in, Andrew, Philip, Tybee 500 guys, where are you?

a veritable beast shown well in this video of the 1 on sydney harbour in the 80's
nacra australia recently took molds off this boat, i think, and started very limited production

EC,
I've been flying around the North recently so haven't been on the forums much. Thanks for the photos!!! I have to repair the stringer in my starboard hull next spring. The previous owner may have cut through it to repair a beam strap bolt and then just left it. Instead of taking the front deck off, sigh. Those photos show clearly how I am going to have to lay up the fiberglass mat! I will post my own photos when I do it.
Regards,
Dave

Thank-You for the wonderful explanation and offer to help EdChris177!
Just one more project for this spring.
Beginning to wonder if I shouldn't start looking for another cat?
I do have a line on a Hobie 16 that looks to have been sitting on a rocky beach for ten years.
Not even sure a Hobie 16 would work for my weight 300lbs?
