Smaller main sail on Nacra 570??  Bottom

  • Hello, i have a Nacra 570 and love it, but is too big for my father to sail it (solo), he got scared easy and wants to trade for a getaway, wich i dont. Question! Is there a way to Set a smaller main on the 570? May be a N5.2 main, wich i found on eBay? Or a H 16 main..., does a Jib furler helps on depowering the 570? It is stearable?
    Please advice!!

    Thanks
  • yes, a jib furler would help depower it

both the hobie16 and 5.2 have sails designed for booms

and i think the nacra570 is boomless, so i doubt they'd work...

    getaway's not that bad
  • Jib furler definitely way to go here IMHO.

He just has to know that it will be harder to tack without a jib. Delay crossover until last moment. Also Loose sheet and track until under way seems to help me.

    Voice of inexperience. Good Luck!

  • you can turn a boom(ed) sail to a boomless bu adding a lower batten and clew plate.

we had boats do it with Tornado sails (on g-cats. dart20's etc)

this should probably be done through a sail loft
  • The furler is really nice to have, you can really reduce sail area when needed and if you get stuck in a tack you can unfurl. If you put a little extra rake into the mast and practice you would be able to learn how to tack with just the main. Most important thing I've found is to stay on the original side as long as possible and blow a couple of feet of mainsheet as you go through head to wind so the windvane effect doesnt stop your tack.

I would suggest finding a main from a 500 or 5.0, it is already boomless and provides the needed sail reduction. Another option may be to put reefing points into your existing sail, a sail loft will have to do this for you.

If you have to sell it, make sure you consider selling it to me! :) The shipping would be fun though...
