There are a few things you can do:
Look for a freight or logistics company with a hub near you. It will be easier and cheaper to drop it off and pick it up from the hub (or terminal) rather than having it delivered to your home. I have had great experiences with FedEx Freight and Old Dominion Freight.
You can go to www.uship.com and put a bid out for it. There are a lot of people looking to haul something across country to off set the price of a trip they are making. There are also small logistics companies (usually mom and pop) that will work you in. You have to specify that it will go on top of a truck with ladder racks or maybe racks on a camper shell. I just sent a Hobie 18 mast to Florida from Virginia that way and it worked out very well.
Shipping a mast from VA to NY or Florida with freight has been running me $250-350. The logistics guy was cheaper, but I didn't work out the shipping, so I don't know how much. -

If you ship with a freight carrier, make SURE you insure it for replacement value. I have had 5 masts damaged by various freight lines.

sorry but i have to chime in here on Old Dominion Freight. they brought an HP laser printer that i bought on eBay to my home but they damaged it enroute. when it arrived, it had shrinkwrap over the area where they had smashed the corner to disguise it from me. i looked it over briefly and signed and the driver was GONE, GONE, GONE before i had a chance to pull the shrinkwrap off and discover the damage. of course they won't let you unwrap things before you sign so i was SOL. when i made a claim against Old Dominion, the fine print stated they were only liable up to $50 so that's what i got, and wound up spending another $150 to buy replacement parts to repair it. read the fine print.
i tried to get a bid from 'UShip' this summer and the bids came in around $700-1000 to go 800 miles. i wound up meeting the seller half-way and paid him $100 for his trouble. be sure to read the feedback on UShip bidders too. some of it is pretty scary! often, they're responsible to no one but themselves.
and as mummp stated, get replacement value no matter who you ship with.
done venting...........for now!

I sold a 6.0 to a guy in Washington State. He shipped the hulls to his home. I shipped the mast back east for him.. The shipper had a trailer for shipping long rowing shells and other lightweight boats. It was at least 30 ft long We put the mast on the bed of the trailer and secured it to the boat rack. it was supported the full length of the mast. I guessed that it was not transfered from the start untill it arrived. A real cool setup. He said he did coast to coast trips often. PM me with your contact info and I will try to get the info on the guy!! Not sure what the cost was. cheers Hal
