I just moved up to a Narca F18 Infusion and I want a better storage box for my gear over the heavy pvc tube on my trailer that I have been using. I know there is a guy on the Eastern US seaboard named Tray B. that builts a lightweight aluminum well designed box. I have seen them and they are price competetive with the glass and extruded storage boxes and of excellant quality. I had his phone number and email address and lost it. Does anyone have his contact information. I need to get one before our season starts in New Jersey, Jenna

I built my aluminum gear box out of 1/8" walk plate. It is 10' long and big enough to hold two sets of sails and it has a redwood tray that holds two complete rudder assemblies and a tool box too.This trailer now carries two Hobie 16's. Even though this gear box is many years old, it looks brand new. The box is so strong,you can dance on it. It has stainless steel locking hasp and hinge. The dropping rear door has a silicon gasket so it is nearly waterproof. If you actually submerge your trailer when launching, water can migrate into this box though the hinge but very slowly and it will drain out once you pull out of the water. I always back up to the waters edge and let my trailer tires touch the water and than just roll my boat into the water so my axle and bearing never get wet. Check out my two custom built spare tire clam shell boxes. The new spare tires never see the sunlight. I have a spare for my spare?

I have a good relationship with a local shipping company too.
On my Hobie 21SE trailer, I have a different style sail tube that I made from aluminum. I built this sailtube in 1989 and it looks near new today. It holds my sails, rudder assembly and a small "crane" I use to raise my mast. Stainless steel locking hasp and it also is watertight with silicon gasket seal. Now you can't dance on this tube but I have gently walked on it before without any problem.

Thats is very nice, well done. My boat is sitting on craddles all season at the club on the beach. It is really good at the end of the day to not have to break the boat down. Just beach wheels from water to craddles. I used to dread hitting the beach worn out and knowing I had to break her down. I am however going to have to buy new craddles to fit the Nacra F18 this season. I am looking for a box 10 foot long X 10 inch high X 26 inch wide. With a removable top cover. You should post price for creating a box like the one you show. I have thought aluminum diamond plate would be a nice box as well but figured it would be to expensive to have one custom made. I don't have the tools or skills to do my own.

Bill, That is a great idea on that box. Making the lid on the top is by far the most difficult part about it, that idea simplifies that greatly. Only problem is finding someone with a brake 12" wide to make one to fit my spin pole.
I have the tools and skills to weld up an AL box, I have never given it much thought though as I think it would end up being quite expensive for my time and materials. The glass ones at sailboxes.com seem to be at a price very comparable to trying to do the aluminum myself.

I looked at their boxes and dont care for them. I am using a trailer with one on it to go pick up my Nacra F18 Infusion this week and the owner has a nylon strap wrapped around the cover to keep it secure tight. The box was purchsed in 2003. I figure it will be the last box I own if it is aluminum. We have two members with them and they are bullet proof. Tray Brown who runs with the race circuit on the east coast (US) makes a nice one but I lost his phone number. Bill40421s also does a fine job as do the Amish in Pennsylvania. I dont have contact info for them either, lol. Bill is looking into a quote for me.

Just to let everyone know...I now have a one piece fiberglass mold, i.e. one piece top with the bottom epoxied in making it a one piece box, with the same top sliding lid as my original box and a larger rear hinged door...let me know if your interested. 504-289-5645
