we keep out 18 square on a beach between 2 docks about 75' apart with a boat on a lift on each dock at the deep end constricting the opening to around 40'. the docks face directly east. when the wind is east and 15 or below we have no trouble tacking out. when the wind is above 15 we raft up with our motor boat to get out. when the boat is out in open water tacking is no problem because you can get up enough speed to tack easily. when confined between the docks we do not have enough room to get up enough speed and stall when trying to tack out. just to rub it in for you cold weather sailors we were out this a.m. in 15 knot winds enjoying a delightful sail.
