Will an H18 fit on an H16 trailer?  Bottom

  • I am new to cat sailing, and found a good deal on an H18 without a trailer because he wants to keep it for his other boat. I found a junk H16 with a trailer nearby for next to nothing and wonder if the 18 would fit on it? Thanks
  • Or can it be done with a little modification?
  • The rollers on most cat trailers are adjustable width wise. They have u bolts that can slid on the frame. One issue is the weight. The 18 is a bit heavier than the 16. Check the springs.. Not a bad time to install cradles in the rear insted of rollers.. Better for the hulls.. Most cat railers have a frame that is long enough for a boat 2 ft bigger as well.. Hal.

  • May work, may not. Depends on the trailer. If it will, you would have to adjust the rollers. Could be welded or rusted or cross members to short. Look at the trailer and see if there is some adjustment.

  • if you do go a H16 trailer with rollers for a H18

think about adding some kind up hull cradles

the H16 doesn't really need them as it had very strong, thick keels

but curved hulls are built lighter and will not take jolting or over-strapping as well with only the point contact of rollers

you can buy them or make your own

for my nacra 5.2 i made some cradles from off-cuts of 12' poly pipe from a local sewer-main project

added heavily painted wooden bases to slide on the trailer arms and glued some bits of carpet on the inside curve

  • Just be careful not to have the cross bars too close together. In my opinion, the bars should be at least 6 preferably 8 feet between them this makes for a much more stable trailer. On my 5.5 trailer they are more than 8 ft. HTH, Richard.
