I picked up a prindle 16 for really cheap and have decided that It might be cheaper to replace the hulls than to do the needed soft spot repairs. Anyone know someone in the south east with hulls to sale? Or should I just part this bad boy out? I've got tramp multiple sails and all the other parts as far as i can see.

First of all, there are fewer & fewer of these boats available and very few people (coastrat excepted) who put the proper value on the Prindle 16. It is a MUCH improved boat over the Hobie 16, stiffer, better hardware, lighter, and easier to put sails on, easier to tack. Second, injecting hulls is not like spending the day with your mother-in-law. It is easy & fast and makes the boat last. I much prefer carrying the P-16 mainsail down to the boat than a rolled up H-16 main (with integral boom & blocks) and it's a much safer boat to sail or right from capsize. Just read the report about the popular 16 (the ISAF evaluation report) on Catsailor forum. When you find a P-16 for next to nothing, consider putting it in tip-top shape for a few bucks or go spend $20000 for a new Nacra-17 (fob Europe) and soon to go up to $25,000. Pete -

a gallon of resin, roll of blue tape, horse syringe, a warm afternoon, and your sailing! less than 50$ and i guarantee you -AND- challenge you to destroy that boat! don't be afraid to inject it, you have nothing to lose right?...nobody had a bigger POS p16 than i did...i injected the crap out of it and have logged over 75 trips on it so far...several of which in some seriously rough stuff. last weekend we had three of us on it(well over 500lbs crew, 50lbs beer) in some good stiff winds/chop, only came close to pitchpoling one time! it's killing me not going sailing tomorrow...i love small craft warnings

its not the injecting that bothers me its the amount of soft spots I keep finding. Also the sides of one of the hulls has a wavy look.
Also I am jealous of your last weekend! I would have loved it!

Pete, I'm really glad you wrote that. Back in the day I had a Prindle 16. I loved that boat! But I always wondered if there was something better out there. (Human nature.) Something kept telling me that was one sweet ride, though. Good to know I wasn't wrong.
I'd love to find one out here. :(

is the wavey parts on the inside of the hulls between the crossbars?...iv'e got them too, don't worry. just fill up what you can find and sail it. there is no damage to that boat that some glass can't fix. i hope to get to t he coast next weekend, i'll give you my # if i do and i'll show you what iv'e done to my boat and take you out for some pointers...unfortunately i think it will be calm, but a great day to get aquanted with the boat. mayby we can get capt. backasswards to drag down his p16 and matt to break out his 19 for some fun.

That's why I picked up those 2 P16's up in ID. They were cheap and I'd love to get at least one of them back on the water. Maybe both but one mast pretty tweaked. I may not even get to them this year but I hope to eventually.

the wavey parts of the hull are on the outside of the boat near the crossbars. I found some hulls that are in better shape that I am considering picking up if the price is right. I'm not even sure my hulls are water tight to be honest. I really purchased this thing for the trailer, and then decided I might try to fix it. now I'm a little overwhelmed haha...
What causes these wavey parts?

Thanks, Pete! I'm unfortunately not in the market at the moment since I'm still fixing up the boat I just bought. But I'll keep Johnnie Driscoll in mind, and I'll keep an eye on Prindles on Oahu when I'm ready to make that move.

on a lot of old boats you get that wavey effect on the inside of the hulls by the front crossbar, this is from people standin/bouncing on the hulls trying to right the boat. as long as they arn't delamed, don't worry with them. now if the wavey parts are flapping loose and totaly delamed, they still can be fixed with injection, may use some screws to pull layers toigether or boards/straps combo, but they will still stick together when resin is squished all between them. new hulls in good shape is easy though

Another factor causing wavy hull sides. About '76 (not sure exact year) they epoxied an 1 1/2" aluminum post inside hull underneath front beam to floor to help carry the loads. Pete -

So how did your injection go? I am thinking about taking on the project of injecting the entire port hull of my P16. What do I have to lose?! I have wavey sides also, so I plan on trying to measure the distance between the two layers of fiberglass, screwing areas closer together if needed, letting the holes dry out for a couple of days incase there is water in the foam, and inject the hell out of her. Hopefully I can find time in the next couple of weeks.

Add some heat lamps of some kind to your drying process to help make sure it is dry.

My 16 is wavy on the inside of both hulls. One hull had a 1'x3' soft spot that I filled with resin, the other is rock solid. I plan on sailing it till the hulls fall off.

I love my prindle 16. I've sailed everything from the 14 hobie to a tornado. And the prindle 16 is my absolute favorite. That's why my supercat 17 is now for sale. The worst boat I've ever sailed is the hobie 16. Fix the prindle and sail the balls off it. -
