I can't find a replacement stud with a square shank anywhere local. Any one have any ideas. i have been trolling online but have not found anything yet. I hate to replace hubs and or axle just for this.

Sorry not sure what the trailer pic rotated the thumbnail was right side up when I submitted it.

  • When I went to NAPA for lug nuts, they had a whole page of different threads & configurations. By the way I always have used trailers to sell & you can double stack for long drive. Pete

he has stainless lugs for sure, perhaps regular crappy ones too :)

if he doesn't i can try to beat one out of my old hubs i have in my garage...
  • I did not try NAPA, so I'll try that if not I call call catman.

    Andrew:

if you can tell if any of them are square without knocking them out that could be cool. I'll let you know. Apparently nothing new uses a square shank like that. The boat was an 86 so the trailer could be over 25 years old. It sure has enough rust to look it.

    Pete:

This one came with an old H17 I got for free. I'd love to buy a double stack ready trailer someday but The price has be right and right now the price would have be pretty dang cheap.

I tried to double stack a P16 on top of my P18 last weekend and the trailer couldn't handle it. (Not the trailer in picture). The springs were almost flat and the tires would rub and squeak on the fender at every little bump. I got about a half mile and had to go home and take the P16 off. I just had it upside down on top of the other boat with a 2x6 with padded ends between the beams.

This is the one I use for my P18. I just added the deck so I can put Camp Stove stuff under the boat.

  • Might be a good idea to scource an entire hub assembly as back-up, there are always problems with old trailers. Just today I drove around town trying to match a 9x2 roller and square type u-bolt, all my rollers were sized, broke 3 u-bolts removing roller bracket, had to drive roller pin out of roller, remove years of rust-crud on grinding-wheel, grease, re-insert. Found matching brackets at 5th store, did not find rollers so had to re-use old rollers. After 2 days just finished putting rollers back on trailer and put cat back on rollers.

the P O of my boat put this sheet of marine ply on the trailor, talk about handy...it ends up being the lounge, makes a great work space. i sanded and put a few coats of a tan exterior paint on it a few years ago so it stays cool and is nice and smooth. haven't slept on it yet but it's coming i'm sure. i like the look of quarath's decking! turns the trailor into a party space!

  • The deck was really easy to do. You can get angle iron cross pieces at Home Depot/Lowes (I forget which I got it from) that are 48 inches for about $10. You need may 4 of em and only need to cut 1 down. They already have holes in them so if you get some good outdoor deck screws and put small washers around them you can attach it all from underneath. The crosspieces have a single bolt hold them on each side with a nylon grip nut. Deck is just pressure treated lumber from Lowes. I'll have to get an updated pic this one was taken while it was under construction. I filled in some of the wood in the very front with a layer on top so I could mount a big Rubbermaid. toolbox to it.

I am keeping an eye on it to see if the screws underneath are all holding ok. I don't want to be dropping them out all over the road. So far it seems ok but if I have trouble I may go back and take em out one at a time add a bit of glue to each. Will be a pain but better than flat tires.

  • Update: I wanted to post this earlier but got busy sailing.

So I ended up buying a close match to length and thread at NAPA.

I then proceeded to fabricate what I needed from that

Turned out pretty good I think.
