What race/regatta would you suggest for a top ten list in North America?
Nominations should be for a regatta in which you have or would personally race. For most of us, this leaves out the America's Cup
This could well morph into a bucket list, or better yet- a seasonal circuit.
Please supply the name, location, sponsor and why you think the race is top ten worthy.
My nomination is the Tri-Point Anacapa Ocean Race.
Starts off of Ventura Harbor, CA
34 NM course past oil platform Gina and Anacapa Island to starboard and then a screaming 16 NM beam to broad reach back to shore. It is possible to race the entire course and tack only once. Sea life abounds- we were tracked by a pod of dolphins this year.
Pierpont Bay Yacht Club has sponsored this race as a part of the Island Series for 13 years, and has welcomed beachcats since 2006. Your catamaran must be 18 feet in length or larger, some 16s allowed with prior permission. There are six classes of sailboats, and the beachcats start last (after the big multihulls). You will spend the entire race passing other boats.

I would say second or third on the list would be the Frenchy's Rum... Same location as the Tri-Point; however, this is out to Anacapa and back with out going around the island..
Mug Race, Starts in Palatka, Florida, ends at the Rudder Club in Jacksonville. 38 miles down the St Johns River. Billed as the longest river sailing race in the world. It is not a "catamaran only race" but it is almost always won by a catamaran.
I just got back from the Spring Fever 2013 Regatta on Lake Hartwell, GA and it was a first class event. What a great mix of sailors and the hosts are the best.
I just looked at their site and it looks like a great event.
Were the different cat classes run separately or in PHRF ?

Looks well organized- how long is the race in distance?
How many beachcats usually attend?

This distance race looks really fun.
Have you done it?
30 some miles in one day, down river, north to Jacksonville?
Staggered start based on handicap?
It is a wide river, but it does wander a bit.
Is the dominant wind direction from offshore?
It doesn't look like there is more than 50 feet of landrise between the river and the ocean over the course.
Really fun!

Juana Good Time Regatta is my favorte. The big two regattas at OSYC "Slip to Ship" and "Island Hop" are next and any bouy race held at Key Sailing in Pensacola is awesome, if you can hadle 5, 6, 7 maybe even 8 races in one day (better eat your wheaties first). Have been to spring fever but it's 500 miles from me or it would be on my list too.
Bob:
Last year there were 6 attending. Yes, it's well organized and the Club and skippers are welcoming. I think it is about 21 miles.
I am a wannabe racer. I purchased a N5.7 too late in the season to get it wet last year. Maybe this year I'll try this race. I'll have to find an experienced crew to keep me out of trouble, you interested?

I'd love to sail them all but I'm afraid of the ocean!!! Bob Martinez
Really?
Is that why you won't wear a drysuit when you single-hand your P18-2 in the Pacific?
You don't wanna pee in your pants?
You've been single-handing 18 foot cats in the channel for two decades. It's probably time you got over it.

My psycholigist is helping me through this. She says, "Be a mermaid (merman???) And don't be afraid of deep water, but be afraid of shallow living!" It's helping!!! Bob Martinez
Need to define great regatta. Great party or good competition? The best is a combination of both. Also distance racing may not really be a regatta?
My beach cat bucket list (a little bit in order):
1) Worrell 1000-not run
2) Tybee 500-done, lots of fun, would do again, not run
3) GT300-looks like fun but I've heard mixed stories about the great state of Texas...
4) Statue of Liberty Race: http://www.fleet250.org/cgi-bin/racing.cgi
5) Steeplechase
6) class Nationals
7) St. Barth Cata Cup, regarded as top 10 globally
tons more this summer, Madcatter is supposed to be a lot of fun, http://www.fleet204.com/204norcurrent.shtml, hearing great things about Hyannis, New England 100, High Points Dinghy Open etc.
Lake Erie....Fresh water, no sharks or jelly fish and a party town atmosphere.
Sounds like heaven.
How did you get rid of the jellyfish?
