My crew has bought a boat. It's great for him but, I guess I'm sailing 1up until I find another crew. Anyone out there sail a Hobie 18 1up? Any ideas on the Portsmouth rating? I sail with a local club in open class handicap regattas.

Actually you will find the 18 is a much better 1up boat. Its way to heavy and slow with two people. My 18 is my main ride ,but I dont bother racing it because its portsmouth number is terrible. Singlehanded 71.4 x .97 L4 hit=69.25 you will do better boat for boat but you will always correct out next to last. That being said I am in NC as well and I know there are a few 18s out here and it would be great to to able to race them. I was planning on taking it to RR3 ,one other 1up 18 from here is going maybe we could get a class?

My experience has been the opposite, we got a guy local that races his solo. He has been killing us on the rating when racing spin boats.

I sail 1 up when conditions allow. I get nervous in moderate to heavy air since I can't solo right. I love the feel of the boat solo, so different and more alive then when you have crew. Solo trapped off my wings flying a hull is a great experience. No experience racing or Portsmouth numbers when solo.

ditto what smfinley said... 'cept I don't usually have my wings on anymore..... can't right it alone, but I've done dumber things..
seems kind of a handful on tacks sheeting in all that jib, then main, and then buoys working boards, outhaul, etc, etc..

I sail 1 up on my 18 a lot. But like others have said I am very wary of wind and conditions. I have about 20 years on an 18 and I can not right it so unless I am with a bunch of guys I take care not to flip it.
I also agree that the boat is a blast solo, easy to fly hulls and go fast but it is a little busy boards, down haul, rudders, furling yada yada, Be safe and sail with a group and you should be fine. HTH, Ricardo.

Can't speak to a hobie 18. However. On my I-17. Nacra. I always solo. Had same problem on righting. I purchased a righting bag. Haven't had to try it out yet.

I've sailed solo over the winter. Yes, NC had a few warm and windy days this winter. But, I found the boat to be a bit too much for just me in a 15-25 wind. I have since gotten a harness and righting bag. Now I guess it's just time on the water.
As for racing, I think I'll try it 1up. Thanks for the handicap info, 69 is low but I around here we're not that serious about who wins. It's more of a learning thing. I think I learn more in one day racing than a month of recreational sailing.
Genmar - I would like to try my hand against another h18, what's RR3? Where do you sail in NC?

Great video, Genmar. I too sail my H18 solo most of the time although admittedly not as well as you. At 225# I've been beaten straight up by small guys sailing H16s in light conditions. To me, the H18 really shines as a solo cat when the winds are in the mid to upper teens. -

I agree, great video Genmar! Been thinking of trying the south end of the island this summer. It might be a bit much for me. I'm still working on getting out on the wire. Y'all had it goin on!
I've heard only good things about the Rivah regatta and am making plans to bring my 18 for some fun. I'm in for a 1up class.
