Hey guys, I ran across this Nacra 5.2 earlier on craigslist. Would you mind telling me what you think about it? I'm concerned about the paint job and structural integrity of a '79 cat. I think the price is a little high too considering the condition is so unknown.
I'm no expert but the black could cause structural problems later because it is going to get ridiculously hot any time you sail it even if you do store it covered. I think it would get hot enough to start breaking down the hulls. Can anyone correct me if I am wrong?
I used to own a 5.2 and it was a great solo boat. I wanted to paint it blue but everyone I talked to told me I was nuts to do anything but white in Florida. I settled for a thick blue stripe down each hull. It was no where near as "pretty" as this boat but it was structurally sound. I sold it for $800. I've regretted it ever since.
The price is not out of line, but there are some caveats.
I second the comments on black paint in Florida, plus scratches will start to look terrible. On th eothe rhand, if you want to camp with your cat, you will not need a frying pan.
There are a few other points as well. That '79 has the old skinny DS rod/V strap. They were prone to breakage. I have one sitting in my shop that is snapped in half. They also used the 1 1/4" mast ball, not impossible to find/make, but scarce.
Can't tell from the photo, but it probably also has the non captive mast base. Does not appear to have had any upgrades done since '79.
It still has the original centre tube, & I see the beam caps are missing. To me, the value(in the vendors mind) is mostly in the paint & trailer.
It may be in good shape, or, as Phil said on Duck Dynasty, "make up can cover a lot of evil Cole Man."
The 5.2 is no slouch, & carries a pretty good Portsmouth for a mature boat.
