Stripe kits for Hobie 16?  Bottom

  • Summer is here and I would like to restripe my H16. I have found a few decals from Ebay, but no stripe kits. Is there a place to order the correct kit for the H16. I dont have any pics just yet but it is yellow and had the 3 stripe kit on it.

  • I like to find a kit for a '82 H-16 Boomer 4 stripes Blue-Purple-Red-Orange.

  • I replace the strips on my 82 14 turo a couple of years ago. I was able to match the strips and colors using the 3M vinyl strips. They are available from auto paint dealers. It was not a problem to do the curves as the vinyl tape will streach. The hard part was maintaining the same spacing between the stripes. I pealed one color off at a time and them replaced it with the new tape and everything remained lined up correctly. The orginal striping came as a four strip "kit" on a single backing. I don't believe isis produced or available anymore.

I found this 3M striping tape (called Scotchcal I believe) but my difficulty is in the aft end of the stripe where it widens and angles downward. Does anyone have an idea of how to do that for less than $100? I had a vinyl shop give me a quote of $200. Maybe paint?

If you got a Quote for $200 to do both sides in the configuration you want, I would buck up and pay. Striping is not hard on a short flat surface but without technique and practice, it's next to impossible on a long curved surface. If you want it to look factory, have a professional do it. If you want it close but not quite, then forget the narrowing and curves and just lay it out following the patterns from the original and terminate them at the bow with an angled cut that matches the boats lines. You'll get roughly the same effect and save yourself the vulgarity excersise.

Oh yeah, and do not paint on those stripes. If you can't lay out vinyl tape in a straight line then you can't mask off the stripes for paint any better. Just my .02

I'll be working off the original lines that are fairly pronounced. I assume laying vinyl or laying tape in order to paint would be fairly straight forward.

If its going to cost me $200 for some darn hull stripes then I just won't worry about it....

  • Take it to one of those precision computer grahic places and have them make them. They aren't that expensive. Also would advise letting them install as well.
