Righting ... unexpected problem.  Bottom

  • Flipped my Hobie Wave yesterday for first time. I know drill: disconnect main, release jib control line, did that ...then I got unexpected problem - hull on inside so slippery I can't stand on it! I was falling and slipping for good 5 minutes while trying to right cat.
What can I do to fix this? Should I sand hulls to make them less slippery?

    Thanks,

  • I have only had that problem after waxing or using some product on the hulls.

have you recently waxed/polished or used other product on boat? if so ... don't "lube" up anywhere you will be standing ... maybe even go so far as to try and strip any product off that area with dish soap or other (acetone).

did you have some type of beach/water shoe on? if not ... wear em
  • I had that issue with my SC after newly gelcoated and fresh wax - solved it by wearing beach shoes

  • Quotedont know what surfing booties are

hahaha! Andrew you killing me....... bomb I guess you could call them dive boots, but surfers don't dive so we just call them surf booties. I had a pair I used for years when I surfed, then I used them for sailing untill they perished. Now I have real boat shoes..... icon_biggrin
  • i have many pairs of dive boots. they are great for being underwater but they are not designed to grip to wet gelcoat

    these boots are:

  • I don't see anywhere on the company website that it claims to have any type of extra traction (or any type of traction)

All i see mentioned about these shoes bottoms is "Durable rubber sole"

Other boots on the website do have the "N-Grip outer Sole"

  • I wear these, they have good grip and are well made.

and keep several pair of cheaper versions in my sail bag for crew so they won't sail barefoot or try to wear flip-flops which always get lost.

  • You did not mention if you ever righted the CAT. The slipping could have been caused by your eagerness to execute the recovery.

  • Most all wiundsurfers for 30 years have used Okespor (Florida model) booties made in France. Distributed here by Aerotech Sails in Florida. Very soft rubber bottoms that grip well. Pete
