Hello
I just purchased a Hobie 16 last weekend and took her out Sunday for the shakedown cruise. Not a lot of wind but we had fun anyway. Actually there were four sailboats out that day... the other three gave up and fired up their motors.... The Hobie was the only one that could move in such light wind....
Anyway... I need your help. It seems that somewhere along her journey, she lost all of her blocks. So I rigged a temporary system for the main sheet using some "pulleys" I got from Tractor Supply Co. and just attached sheets to the jib clew with a shackle and ran them back to the cam cleats on the front cross bar (ama).
What is a good solution for replacing the block system for the main traveler? I went to eBay and found something that looks right but.... they called it a "main down haul" system. I think of a down haul as the system that pulls the gooseneck down, not the aft of the boom down. So is that what it is called on a Hobie? I don't want to buy the wrong thing.
And I really don't understand what is going on with the jib. I looked at some on-line photos and found a pic with two blocks on the jib clew with sheets running through those block and back to blocks on slides attached at the front ama...then back to the cam cleat fairlead. But the pics didn't really show how the lines went. Any pics or diagrams on how that is supposed to be set up? And suggestions on where to get replacement blocks for the jib clew?

rgranger, congratulations on the new boat, it sounds like you are in dire need of the Hobie 16 assembly manual and the parts guide.
These are both available for download on the Hobie site
http://www.hobiecat.com/support/hobie-16/
The pictures in the assembly manual are pretty funny. What year is your Hobie 16? The exact arrangement of jib blocks and traveler changed over the years.
But the main thing that may be confusing you, if you come from a monohull background, is that the jib sheet is one continuous sheet for both sides instead of a port and starboard sheet.
After you get the right parts
These for instance.

Start from scratch and try to rig your boat just like the assembly manual shows. Experienced owners do many small mods but that is after understanding how the stock systems work.

Damon
Thanks soooo much... that is what I needed.
I don't know what year I have... and neither did the previous owner but my HIN ends in 88 so if I had to guess... but I don't really know how to interpret the HIN so it could just be the hull #... but it is a really long HIN (???)

What are the last three digits of the hull number?

Ranger, use these to help you decode the HIN #

If your boat has the original sail, this may help.

Dear Renovator
That picture is way better than the manual. Thanks a bunch.
EdChris: Thanks for the links on the HIN. I'll have to look at my HIN when I get home tonight.

Granger, does your jib traveler setup look anything like the above pic? Most of the older H16's had just the old style jib traveler block on a spring and when the spring stretched, the block flopped around on the front beam leaving scratch marks. 80's upgrade was to add the 2 inner 360 swivel cam cleats with base plates but you still had the jib block flopping around on the front beam. Recent upgrades have done away with the jib traveler block and there are 2 kits available from Murrays.....
1).......http://www.murrays.com/mm…e=01-3112&Category_Code=
This kit uses the Tren Tec traveler cars however, they are not included in the kit.
2) ......http://www.murrays.com/mm…120&Category_Code=C-MO-T
This kit uses the new Ronstan traveler cars but does not include the swivel 360 cam cleats with bases -

I think I have the 80's upgraded ....at least it looks a lot like the pic you sent and sounds like the description... and from what I can tell from my HIN (and from pictures of sail/models I've looked over...) I think I have an 89 model made in 88.
