New distance race in development. Jersey Shore Catamaran Classic  Bottom

  • Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club is in the developmental stages of a new distance race for 2014 season. George Evans will be the event Chairman. The race would be from Cape May, New Jersey to Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. This is a two day race with a beach the boat and stay over one night midway. This will be approximately a 135 mile trip. There will be three racing classes. Hobie 16 class with a 320 minimum weight (class rules apply), F18 class (class rules apply), and a Open class. (Portsmouth ratings apply for all other cats). The time frame being discussed is for the period soon after Labor Day as not to cause problems with bathers in the surf for emergency landings. This would become an annual event. We are looking for feedback of those seriously interested in competeing so that we can proceed with the planning if there is support for such a race. Please send suggestions and enquiries. Email is prefered but posting will be acceptable in the forum also. Additional details will be forth coming and we look forward to seeing you off the coast of New Jersey in September 2014

    Yes Bob,, That would be correct and AC is a likely overnight site as others along the way like Long Beach Island or Island Beach for that matter. It will be a function of available wind on those days and part of that process will be posting that the day before the race and race day. So having spots further up the coast might make good sense as fail safes for wind conditions. Chase crews on the ground are important also for those that need to bail out for whatever reason.

    Yuo could work the cost of the chase crews into the entrance fees, staff them with family members and local youth sailing volunteers/scouts. People come ashore because they are hurt/the boat is damaged/there is no wind/they are lost. The chase vehicles would transport people for medical aid/boat parts, and carry a marine VHF radio, cell phone and a first aid kit.
    You might have to clearly define what kind of assistance the chase crews can give out over the radio, e.g. NOT telling who is in what place or locations of the other boats.
    I am excited about this race.
    To enter a race thats's just over 2500 miles away, I may need a second spare for the trailer. icon_biggrin
    Maybe I can talk someone into a double stack...

    We need to come up with a good beneficary for a donation to also.
    Yup this is a huge deal to put together. Our first organizational group meeting should be done shortly now that our last fleet race is in the bag

  • Never sailed competitively and never anywhere near that distance but hey this sounds like it might be a great inspiration. Why the 320lb rule? Been sailing a 16 off the beach in Sea Isle, NJ for about 25 years. That's between A/C and Cape May. Thanks for trying to get this started.
  • Reason for upping the minimum weight on 16's , people are more inclined to sail with 2 adults this way, most 16 racers sail with kids as crew to be close to the 285 minimum class weight .. They used the 330 weight in the Worrell 1000 . We are trying to see how many people might be interested,spread the word ..

  • Awesome. Is the plan for everyone to stay in the same area for the night?
    I would love to sail all the way up to Lavallette so my crew and I can stay at our place there.... but if everybody is camping/staying in the same hotel - that would probably be a blast!

    Again - we're not really going to try to win - we just want to be in it...

    The race and area sounds really cool but I'm wondering how this would work?

    Isn't that an expensive resort area that the overnight stop rooms would need to be booked well in advance? Doesn't sound like a place where competitors could camp on the beach even if they carried the gear for that. I must be missing something.

    Camping on the beach in NJ is really scarce - some places you aren't allowed on the beach after midnight and can't even have a fire.
    I assume we will require special clearance for us to just land our boats and beach them overnight.

  • This is a race I'd be interested in doing but there are a lot of logistics. Providing a ground crew sounds great, if all that crew is doing is moving a trailer and cheering the team (hopefully). What happens when you have an injured sailor in leg 1, or have a breakdown? The list of people I'd want on my ground crew is pretty darn short; the flip side is I'd have a darn hard time convincing those people to fly to NJ for a weekend of ground crew. Add in the hassle of a stop, cost associated etc. and this gets more difficult to add to our calendar. Entice us with a casino sponsor :)

    I'd score the race on total elapsed time, sort out the stop for the slower boats but we'll aim for a straight shot. Yes 136 miles is a serious distance, but hopefully for most of that you have beach you can stop on if you break and we can manage >17kts in the right conditions for an 8 hour day on the water.

    Thank you for proposing this and working on the organization. We'll drum up support when things are a little more formalized.

    Those are the logistical issues we are working out as this begins to unfold. Yes it is a two day race with a stay over which would most likely be in the Island Beach area which is a State Park so those folks are on the schedule to talk with. Wind conditions are favorable off the coast this time of year but we would need alternate plans (TBD). There is also a local hotel in walking distance that we are talking with and local food services. So like I said, George and his group are getting the logistics worked out. Stay tuned, you worry about finishing the race and we will get the details ironed out.

  • Island Beach State park does not typically allow camping... perhaps an exception can be made.

    I'm glad that's the destination though!!!! That's right by my parents place in Lavallette.

    I can't believe they sourced funding for a movie that bad, we have sunk to new lows. I managed about 15 minutes of it on TV.
