I'm looking into options for future vacation sailing in the Biloxi area. I'm hoping some of our Mississippi sailors will have some input on what options there might be. I'm open to either rv/camping with bay/lake sailing access or beach rentals with gulf sailing access. Doesn't have to be in Biloxi but needs to be close enough to keep the Casinos within driving distance . If anyone knows of any beaches, camps, parks, etc in the area that set up for easy mast up multiday sailing please pass along. I will be in the Biloxi area next week (not for sailing) so I can scope out any leads I get.

bingo...Biloxi/ocean springs is the place. I used to launch at the Kuhn street launch aka "secret spot" but they have upgraded the place and made it too nice haha! it's still a good place to launch from but you are between the schooner pier and the yacht club pier and it can be tough for beginners to sail out of. the ocean springs yacht club is my spot now...a true beachcat club. you launch in Biloxi bay with all options available(bay sailing, casino row, horn island, both ship islands). I went ahead and applied for an out-of-town membership and hope to be a member by spring(on waiting list and not sure they want a guy like me hanging out there! ). either way, let me know when you are coming, i'm trying to go tomorrow and or this weekend and will be trying to go all the way up to thanksgiving(when the fat lady sings for me).
here is the osyc on a race day last year
here is Kuhn street launch last summer being worked on...it's done and real nice now.

the areas between Kuhn street and the osyc are filled with casinos/hotels. if you shop them right, you can find rooms at the casinos cheap during the week sunday-wednesday nights(50$~). leave the boat at the club...it's right across the bridge from Biloxi. there are plenty of great restaurants in that location also..
here is a nice shot of the west end of horn island, the holy grail of beachcat destinations for the northern gulf of mexico!...just 14 miles southeast from the yacht club...totally wild barrier island far enough off shore to feel like you got away.

Coastrat, thanks for the info. Sounds like a great area for sailing! I'll be sure to check these spots out when I am there the weekend of the 9th. Would I be able to use the OSYC facilities as a guest/non-member or is it members only? Are you able to leave a boat mast up overnight at the Kuhn street location?

Everything CoastRat said.
The sailing at Ocean Springs Yacht Club is actually run by a non-profit organization called the Ocean Springs Sailing Squadron... and yeah, go setup there and sail your heart out.
Should you wander into the club for a refreshment after a sail, it's real local style, low-key friendly so just tell them (on the rare chance someone asks) you came by to sail.
We get lots LOTS of out of towners and they're kind of the norm thanks to regattas we have, etc.
Check out "Ocean Springs Sailing Squadron" on facebook for the fulll 411.

Steve, sorry, didn't answer your question... the club is member only, but you can setup and sail there. Again, kinda cold now for the pool, but if you wander inside for a burger and coke, etc. no issues.
Otherwise, you can sail with a member and have full guest privledges to the hot showers, etc, etc....
e-mail fleetcaptain@osyc.com for a connection... or just e-mail me or coastrat and maybe we can be there and go sailing with you.... ( ( robertdpatt ) at gmail..... ))
you can also check lodging at VRBO.com and search ocean springs... or book a place where Elvis hung out at Gulf Hills Resort and tell them you're sailing at Ocean Springs.
GREAT RV park over on Pass Road in Biloxi, literally RV famous, called Great Oaks, or Majic Oaks or something... supposed to really be a good place.
cheers.

Sounds like osyc could be a nice option for me on future trips. I won't be bringing my boat on this trip but I will definately scope osyc and the area out next weekend when I am there. If I happen to see you guys on the beach I will stop by to say hello. Thanks to both of you for the information.

Just got back from Biloxi. We had a great weekend and really enjoyed our time in the area. I intended to go to Ocean Springs on Saturday afternoon to see if anyone was sailing but we drove to Gulfport in the morning and didn't make it back to Biloxi until after dark. We did go to OSYC Sunday morning and checked it out. Really nice setup and the area looks to be primo for sailing. I did see at least one set of catamaran tracks on the beach from the day before so sorry I missed you if one of you guys was out sailing on Saturday! Not quite the same but we did sneak in a 2.5 hour sail Friday afternoon on the 58' schooner that the Museum Districts operates. Looking forward to coming back when I can stay a week or more and bring my own boat!

We may have a group doing a few of the OSYC regattas next year. I have been excited and planning on going the last few years and wasn't able to go. If we were to come for a week or so around the regatta is there a membership we could purchase or some way to keep 2 boats mast up on the beach for that week?
Steve, have you come to any of the 1st Saturday's at the dike? They are a blast and get quite a few cats on the beach for our area.
Thanks,
Ernie

Ernie,
Nice youtube video, I have my buddy Don at Salty Dog Marine custom make my kids butt buckets in an extra small size. The price was reasonable and the kids loved having a bucket that fit good. This bucket has long since been outgrown.............

Ernie,
I try to make as many of the first Saturdays as I can but this year has been busy for me so I've only made a couple of them. I did attempt sailing in the Redfish Reach last month, or maybe I should say I "floated" in it since the wind was pretty weak. I hope to give sailing a higher priority next year and get out a little more. I haven't talked with the folks at OSYC myself but it sounds like you should be able to work something out. I intend to go back for an extended stay myself.

Hi, Ernie. I've met Ernest from TCD, but that's not you, right? I'm sure you can leave boats at OSYC the week before/after a regatta.....lots of people do.....see the info robpatt posted above and contact the Fleet Captain. Y'all let me know when you're gonna be there, and I'll try to come join you for an extra day or two. My son moved to Houston this year, and I stopped by once to see the dyke....cool venue! Hope to make it to one of your events before too long. (I joined the TCD Forum earlier this year as well.)
