I was trying to explain to a non-sailor what a square-top sail was and ended up saying that some were so extreme that the sail was more of a rectangle than a traditional triangle shape.
Looking at the pictures from the MUG Race
https://picasaweb.google.…dderClub/61stMugRace2014
and found some really good examples of this!

I think the Roberts family uses Mack Sails out of FL, and I'm pretty sure they like this design.

Square-top is getting more extreme all the time. My new sails have twice the square top as my previous Pentex sails.
The top angle batten is 53 inches long.

Damn that's a great vivid high contrast colorful pic considering its on a brown lake I personally scan the horizon for sails every time i'm near a big body of water!
Are those what they call "high aspect" ratio? these days they're more of a wing than a traditional sail? Either way, those square tops look killer! More power, More Power!
As a side note, ya gotta love deep color in beachcat sails. Its great advertisement when people take pics of you on your boat ( a couple followed me to see how high i could get the hulls that day ) I wish some media people would take some/more? beachcat pics and publish them in local flyers, newspapers and vacation spot handouts ect, i bet it would generate some sailboat sales and interest.

The white boat is a RC 30, and that is Bill Roberts, his son and another crew member. They have won 18 Mug Races since 1988.
The blue boat with grey sails is an RC 27, Mr Brew/Mr Tierney (Rudder Club members) sailing. They have won the "Round the Island" race and I think the Steeplechase (not sure) with that boat.
We have one other club member with an RC 27 who has won the mug race (Robert Lyman/Daddio/RC27).
I am not sure who the red/white/blue sails are.
The RC's are beautiful and fast boats, but ironically, Mr Roberts will tell you that these are not racing boats just day sailors.
