Hey All:
So I've been sailing for 39 years but I'm a relatively new sailor of Hobies. I'd rent one for a hour or so on Vacation etc. but last fall I purchased a new-2-me Hobie 16. I've only had it out 3 times so far. Once on a big lake in light wind, the second time on a small lake in decent wind but this last Wednesday I got a chance to go out on the big lake in decent wind.... Dang these are fast boats. I covered in 90 minutes what normally takes me all day in by 26' displacement hull boat.
Anyway, what is the custom on naming Hobies and other cats? I've not seen names on these boats but I've named all of my other boats and would like to name this one.
I'm sure it is not original but I'm liking the name Hobie-Wan.... since I definitely felt the force last Wednesday (SAY WHAT!)

I have a P16, first Beachcat, have named her.
even my Optimist is named
I think it's supersticious sailor stuff, however I will continue to name my boats.
I do have a 17 ft Vanguard fish/ski boat too

I named my Hobie 16 the Jimmy D 3 in honor of Jimmy Doolittle the third who gave it to me. He lives down the street from me and he thought that I would like it. Jimmy Doolittle's grandson gave me his Hobie Cat 16! I am not kidding! -

Some 5 years ago, after my first catamaran-experience.. I bought this
P18-2, it was a barn find.
After lots of work, it was time to name the cat. My son asked me; " what
was you're immediate thought when you sailed a cat for the first time ? "
Late last season, during a break, she ran of her mooring dead-downwind
on the stone dyke.
So had to patch her up, since I didn't want to go trough the proces of
repainting I bought some "cat claw" stickers and put them over the repairs.

Hobie-Wan sounds awesome. Name away.
I agree it's probably sailor superstition, but I still knock on wood (and scratch a stay, for crying out loud). My Prindle 16 was Schrodinger's Cat, and my current one, a Pacific Catamaran, is named Smilodon. (Get it? Extinct cat? Har!)
Cats are like Pokemon. Gotta name 'em all!
