Don't waste a weekend, only 12 left!  Bottom

  • Are you getting on the water this weekend?

In a lot of places Labor Day is pretty much the end of the sailing season due to weather and back to school issues.

Between now and Labor Day there are only 12 weekends!

    Don't waste them!

  • Ya, and we are looking at another weekend of NW winds topping out at like 7mph! This getting ridiculous. I got out of windsurfing and back into sailing because the winds are just too light. I figured we would always have at least ten knots. Boy, was I wrong. I am almost ready to buy a freaking jetski.

  • I would say the year so far has been a disaster, except real disaster implies broken bodies,(mine). The last sailboat I was on was MN3's, months ago.
It is warm here, water at the dock was 20C yesterday, & we just put the boatlifts in yesterday, running for cover between thunderstorms.
Since last Aug it has been a litany from father-in-law,(a true gentleman) to old uncles/aunts passing away & I have been swamped, as the financial grunt I get saddled with all the tax implications & prepping/selling their properties.
We are dealing with one last uncle who needs 24/7 care, & one more property. It is mid June & we just put the blow boats in, should have been on the water late April. Burned up another weekend, driving 600 miles damn near to Andre & Kaspers homes in a deluge that would make Noah proud, for daughters Convocation, but hey, you have to do that stuff, despite the fact I know nothing about organic chem or molecular biology. Go Gaels & oil tigh I suppose.
The good news is we go til after Thanksgiving,(that means late Oct here in Canada), & can probably get 30 days in.
Have the N5.0 afloat, the Mystere 6.0XL first sail is Tue, forecast 29C,(84F) humid, with light winds. I have wanted a 10' beam for a while, couldn't find a decent Tornado, so bought a 2001 Mystere 6M. It came with all the fittings for the 8'6" beam as well as the 10' beam, & a custom aluminum tilt trailer. I think I have the spin launch figured out, we''ll deal with recovery when it happens!
I scored hi tech line on a selloff from Fogh Marine, & re-laced the wings. I don't know what they were originally off, but they are bloody long! Hobie 21 or something(?), with new Sunrise tramps. Do you guys actually sit on them, or open up a 15 seat diner & use 'em to sling omelets?
I towed the N5.7 hulls home last night,(kept everything else at the lake house) & blocked them up under the deck, just won't have time to work 3 boats this year.
Kicking my asz for talking to a fellow about his Tiapan 4.9, posting it here,(for a measly $1800 CDN), & not just driving the 35 miles & buying it. When will I ever find another 2001 Taipan for that money? I'm getting old, the allure of a 16' boat that I can flip upright by myself is growing. Still mulling the idea of buying a sweet little Spark 15 that came up again.
Of course with that philosophy I'll soon be another Dave Farmer or worse yet, Hal Liske, who has more damn Cats in his yard than most people have underwear in their drawers.
We had a really shytty winter & spring, envious of you guys sailing in March, however did get in some fabulous days of heli skiing back at the Western home base.

  • All the big and small problems on the boat have been repaired. Hulls have been re-gelcoated (sprayed). Haven't had time to sand and polish. Will do later because now is time to sail. Should raise the mast for the first time tomorrow to make sure nothing is missing. Hope to get on the water sunday. Water is about 63 F on lake Champlain, wet suit required.

  • Well, I never was one to go along with the crowd. Summer here is hot, humid, generally not windy (except for the 15 minutes of petrifiying glory that comes with the afternoon thunderstorms), and (at least on the weekends) our local reservoir is covered with power boats, PWCs, bad music, and intoxicated idiots. (We did get a good after work sail in last Wednesday in 10-15 out of the northwest, relatively dry air, and low 80s.) I'll mostly avoid it until after Labor Day, and drag my boat to the coast for the seabreeze in the meantime. Fall is my favorite....more predictable weather/fronts, better wind, and the water stays warm for quite a while. Not uncommon to sail with just a shorty through November. Never did use a full suit during that mild winter before last.
