Hobie 18 go pro mounting ideas.  Bottom

  • Where are some places I can mount my Gopro on my Hobie 18. I would like to try and mount it to the bridal wires like in this video at .40 seconds.

  • PVC pipe probably filled with spray foam to kill wobble. Mount it like a Spin pole. or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuLQKyw1krY

In this video John has the camera mounted to a stick taped/lashed to the spin pole, stuck to the inside of one of the bows, outside of one of the sterns, atop a hull just aft of the bridle wires, atop the hull just aft of the rear beam. He's a strong believer in editing out everything boring, and limiting each clip to about seven seconds max, mixing up the various angles/shots to keep it interesting. I'm hoping to develop a simple gimbal arrangement for the camera that would allow the camera to stay aligned with the horizon as the boat heels, I think it would give a better feel for hull flying.

Good idea, but I suggest aluminium or carbon piping instead, those materials
    are less prone to wobbling.
I use my padle as an extender behind the boom, which can be seen in this vid

  • Dave farmer's point about keeping clips short is a good one. We use a painters extension handle for a lot of shots. We just hold it at different angles. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IvjJNRDN0A

The suction mount for gopro works well on the hulls for some wet action shots. I find the pole mounted to the bows videos very boring to watch. The best vids are the ones taken from other boats. I understand it is not always possible, but they are great to watch. We have mounted the suction to the daggerboard above the deck. It works well.

I just made this one by bobbing in a kayak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNGw3C75LZY Unfortunately there was a smudge on my lens but it still came out ok. This was just some small lake sailing but I had the rare opportunity to video my daughter and her grandfather. I converted most of it to slow motion, the clips were short as was the video. I think people's attention span is one to two minutes. Pete

  • I agree with Pete that the best shots of hull flying action are taken from other boats, although his shots from the camera on a stick look great as well. The Gopro is amazingly forgiving for vibration and giggling. Yeah, keep it short, much more rewarding than wading thru a 4 minute shot from one angle.

  • here is a pretty good single angle shot - http://youtu.be/rcYdEYkw-NQ
