Yeah, that's the right size and weight, I'd think more like $350 to $400 for that vintage, unless it's absolutely pristine. You don't really need a long shaft, although it's not a great penalty if you have a mount that allows the lower unit to be pulled up enough.

Yea, I thought $500 was a little steep too. I'm not really in the market for a motor. I also kinda hate the idea of putting a gas outboard on my cat. Getting away from the ramp at some launch sites around here is a pain so I think about it from time to time. At one ramp I can paddle to a sand bar to hoist or lower sail. At another one the ramp basin is unforgiving. I'm considering a small anchor so I can paddle or drift clear, drop the hook, and then hoist or lower sail. I've had to paddle dead into a stiff breeze a couple of times. A SC 15 has a surprising amount of windage under bare poles. As the new electrics mature something more cat friendly might develop and the price might come down. Until then, I've got a paddle. GH

Tractor Supply has a 12v battery that is light, sealed, and small that they use in children's elec cars, tractors, etc. You know the kind that kids drive around in...that battery would be very easy to carry on a cat and might do very well with a regular minn kota trolling motor?

I had a Tohatsu just like that on Flight Risk, worked great, and was still running strong when she moved to the Chesapeake. It's the same powerhead as my current, same vintage, Mercury. Tohatsu probably makes them for Merc.

I had outboards on both my H18s and on my Bimare F18HT. Im a solo sailor who likes to cruise far from home and our wind dies up here in NE without notice. I would not have gone out and chanced being stranded on many days without the motor. Paddling long distances solo is not fun. I used the Cheata motor mounts. Look for a 2 stroke with on board integrated gas tank. Still have my old Gamefisher bou my last one was a Florida Outboards which looks like the Chinese models on eBay for $300. I considered the Chinese models and the reviews were positive.
