Cam cleats on Prindle 18  Bottom

  • So I've recently aquired a P18 that needs to be reassembled. I have figured out mostly everything except the cam cleats that are on the front cross beam on either side of the mast. There is an additional line on both jib blocks that I'm thinking may have been ran to these cam cleats. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance! Kyle

  • Possibly part of a barber hauler system. Google "barber hauler for catamaran" and there are some images. I'd post a link, but the URL is massive. The other option is that it's for mast rotation.

  • That would explain the extra block on the outside of the beam as well as the ones in jib sheet. Thanks guys! Now to figure out what the Barber hauler does...
  • The barber haul adjusts the jib sail outboard for downwind sailing, the line would attach to the becket of the (cheek?) block on the jib, run through the outside block on the beam, and then through the cam cleat.

  • Thanks again for the help! I'm fairly new to beachcats but I believe I'm hooked!
  • Lost,
A great resource for learning the basics, as well as advanced techniques, of beach cat sailing is Phil Berman's book, Catamaran Sailing, From Start to Finish. One chapter specifically deals with sail shape and how to use the barber hauler to help achieve the ideal sail planform.

  • Thanks Tim, I'll be sure to pick it up. I've spent the last 2 years sailing and working on a 53' cat in the Virgin Islands so I was able to learn a lot about sailing. Now just to apply it to smaller boats!
