Looks like bungee would be easier to install, but wouldn't rope allow tighter fit especially if non-sagging (when wet) rope were used? Rope is there now, but it's got green algae all over it and needs replaced.

Don't use bungee.
Use solid line (1/4" pre-stretch). Tighten the tramp incrementally until it is drum tight. Don't try to do it all at once or you may pull out a grommet. For the cleanest results, start with the aft lacing first and then do the center lacing.

Install it on a warm day too, so the tramp will be more pliable.
