I riveted two flat washers over the hole and it looks like it will hold for awhile. Typically, how would a sail maker patch this? Tks

This will solve the issue.

Or take it to a sailmaker to have a new grommet put in.

Take it to an awning/canvas shop or sail making and get a spur grommet installed. Should cost you $5 or less. -

If you put significant down haul on your sail you may find that a normal spur grommet won't hold up for long. My preference would be a riveted plate or a reinforced heavy duty steel grommet that a sailmaker can put in.

I used two 2" by 1/8" thick tsteel washers, drilled holes and rivited both together over hole that was left. It was really tricky getting it together to rivet. I had to use some welding plyers / vice grips to hold it tight to compress everything so that the rivets would set properly. A temporary patch till sail is retired.

That'll work. You can actually buy washers like predrilled from sailrite for exactly that purpose.
