Prindle 19 centerboards keep popping up  Bottom

  • Hello everyone!

After a 3 year hiatus from cat sailing we got a really good deal on a Prindle 19. Yesterday we took the boat out for the first time. The only issue we had was the leeward centerboard would partially or fully go from a full down position, up. From what I can tell the only method of keeping the board down is a round lock bearing. They do not look like they need to be replaced.

If anyone else has had this issue and a solution please let me know.
  • The little round friction puck has a screw that you can adjust. It's spring loaded so you can move it in or out controlling the amount of tension.

    THANKS!

Also, make sure that the pivot for the centerboard is firmly set. If you can easily lift the centerboard out of the hull, it is not. There is a piece of PVC pipe that is the pivot and it should pop into place in the socket at the bottom of the well. If it is loose, the little puck will not be able to hold the board down or up correctly.

  • Okay, I think the pivot is the issue then. Thanks !
  • MMA600....the boards should be pretty much level with the deck if they're seated properly. If they're sticking up an inch or more then it's not seated correctly. Once you place the little PVC piece in the board where it swivels you actually have to gently force "bump" them into place so they fall in to the detent. Sometimes I have to pop them pretty hard to get it in.

    Agreed.
Easiest way to get them to pop back in is to hold the rope loop so that the centerboard is in the middle of the well and let it drop straight down. Don't go crazy, just let it fall 6 to 8 inches. You may need to push it a bit. You should hear and feel the pop.
