Hardware lesson on the Tornado  Bottom

  • So the Tornado was refinished, re rigged, debugged and we have been sailing it this summer. Love it. It is so fast. Anyways, out this weekend on the Sound. Flying back and forth. Several hours in, the mast folds in two and lands on the deck and water. Some nice folks from Madison Surf Club see this, rig their Hobie 16 and pull us 3/4 mile back to shore. Big thanks there. Turns out one of the diamond wire fittings had failed. Not sure if this was cause or result, thinking the former. We have new standing rigging on it, but didn't do the diamonds. It is an old racer, so every piece if going to get Zygloed or replaced. Kind of stinks a little swaged on clevis cost us a mast. Oh well, that sailing. I guess its time to find a parts boat with a good mast.

  • Have a Marstrom aluminum extrusion. Pete
  • I got a Prindle 18 mast shipped by Pete to me in Maryland. Got through the trip without a problem. Mast is still going strong; wish the fiberglass was in as good of shape as the mast is. Thanks again Pete. Scott

  • I might know where one is closer to you.

The aircraft forks on the bottom of diamond wires is a known weak point, use the marine terminals, they're more robust.

  • John, check the classifieds. Dan Berger has a mast for sale in Virginia. Guess you won't make the Roton Regatta?
