Nacra 5.0 Jib Battens  Bottom

  • I added roller furling to my Nacra 5.0 several years ago and the small jib battens do not furl well; they end up poking a hole in the batten pocket. The jib is at my local sailmaker's shop getting a new zipper. Has anyone moved the jib battens so they are parallel to the forestay? Does it perform well? Any advice on the batten length, placement, thickness, taper, etc would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric
  • I think the normal setup for roller furling is with vertical jib battens. Checkout the SLO sails website. They have some good pictures.

  • It works fine, no difference.
  • I found a photo of a Nacra 5.7 jib with three vertical battens at SLO Sail & Canvas. I assume the 5.0 would have two battens.

  • Schurr Sails just made a set of sails for my NACRA 500 with a furling jib and it has 3 vertical battens. Sails great and rolls up nice and tight. Only thing I found was you can't roll the jib up when not in use for storage so I am in the process of sending them the jib to make the 3 battens removable. Just a suggestion.

  • QuoteHas anyone moved the jib battens so they are parallel to the forestay? Does it perform well? Any advice on the batten length,

Both our legacy Nacras have Harken furling, & as you noted, it furls like sh*t with the factory batten.
Disregard ideas about making the batten vertical, do as you’re thinking, parallel to the forestry.
You probably have discovered that the job flogs without those two short horizontal battens, so you need to duplicate the support they give.
Placing them parallel to the forestry is close to a 45* angle, so make them almost twice as long as factory & you achieve the same effect.
I just placed them in the same spot as originals, works fine.

  • I think by “vertical” they mean the same as parallel to the forestay. Anyhow, Schurr is gonna make me a set so as long as they roll up good I’m fine with wherever they point.

  • Yes by vertical I meant parallel to forestay. That is how Schurr did mine and they are longer than than the old horizontal battens from original jib.
