Bought old Tornado. Have a lot of questions. :)  Bottom

  • I have used Tornado in a 80's (just several times, because I was too young and our trainer said I need to grow up a little bit to Tornado icon_lol ). And now became owner of old Tornado. I think it's about late 70's and most of rigging and another parts is made by previous owner. As I see most of the spare parts except hulls, boom and sails are custom made.

Also some parts are missing. And nearest Tornado owner in my country is about 400 miles away from me :))))

So I'm trying to find somebody who will give me some advices and photos to help me restore my Tornado to useful state :)

First of all I need to find way to set up mainsheet rigging because for now I have only rear beam with traveler and without traveler car :) So I would be glad if somebody helps me with photos of mainsheet rigging.

  • There is a gentlemen in Ottawa, Canada who used to be production manager of Sailcraft of Canada when it was active. Geoff Dobbs, gumdobbs@gmail.com. he might have some spare parts. Pete
  • Thanks for the answer. I'm from Eastern Europe, so it's little bit easier for me to find some spare parts in Europe (may be).

My main question for now is about swivel cleat position. I have googled a lot and found two different ways to set it up.
First one when swivel cleat is on the traveler:

Second one is on the center of beam:

Second variant is little bit easier to make to me. But what is a more right and useful way? :) For now I don't have neither caret nor swivel cleat with it's platform, so I need to buy it and set up. :)

    Both work fine
Both have good and bad things about them (very minor)
Top one is more modern. smooth and easy glide due to the MANY ball bearings - but expensive

Bottom one is older design. has hardware mounted on mid beam - some like this so they can put there foot on it when sheeting in -
This traveler "car" uses only 6 wheels to roll up and down the track - this system is not as smooth

so the top one rolls easier but this can make sheeting while traveled out hard (the car pulls in when you try to sheet the main)

the bottom one has more friction so sheeting in while sailing downwind is not an issue but traveling out while sheeted tight can be an issue (need to sheet out to allow this car to move)

  • I have the top one on my Prindle 19, and found that I could not completely center the traveler. Not an issue for fun sailing, but for racing I need all the help I can get, and was visualizing that 1.5 inches of traveler position across the entire mainsail area.

So I removed the cleat from the traveler and purchased a used cleat and mount that rivets to the crossbar. Now, the traveler can be centered more. So I've got the best of both worlds in this case.

  • Hi there. We have a new Tornado specific forum over on Groups.io:

    https://groups.io/g/TornadoCat/topics

This is where the old Yahoo group content was migrated to when that forum shut down.
Please register there and post all your Tornado questions. Loads of photos to help you with rigging the boats. Tuning tips etc.

    Cheers.
    Mike.
  • Hi Mike, also informed about the io-group in a private message two weeks ago, but haven’t heard anything. It would be the perfect place for Crayflatline to get help.
