My buddy dropped off a Nacra bridle foil to put on my N5.2 for funzies. With a bunch of shackles and 22" of spare cable I was able to mock it up. Not sure where I am going with this. Maybe self-tacking with the stock jib, maybe a super jib. The foil is an inch too long to bolt straight to the boat. I won't dare cut it down at this stage. Its too valuable of a part to mutilate. The angle of the bridle tabs is unfortunate. Again, I would hate to bend them vertical for a possible silly project. I am sure bolting it down would be a terrible idea because the boat would load up the tabs horizontally. Its not a crossbeam after all.

It sounds like you’ve got a solution and now you are figuring out what was the problem :)
I can definitely empathize with that...
Just consider that double bridles are a simpler solution, depending on what is the problem in the end -

Andinista, the problem is I have a foil...and they make lousy mailbox post. lol. I am just playing around. I don't race hardcore and like modifying boats. I already made wings for it. I guess you can say I am slowly making it heavier.

yes i would not use this foil
it is not needed and messing (bending) with your bridal tangs could be disastrous
the tangs already look like they were torqued (twisted), i would not bend them back (metal fatigue)
Also those shackles should be replaced with pins or shackles that are snug and have no room for play (or use spacers on each side to remove all the room for play in the pin)
a self tacker with the stock jib? why?how? don't do it ;) - ymmv -

Robert that foil is for the 8'6" beam N6.0NA or the N5.5SL. Proper attachment would be to a 8'6" beam boat with a 10 hole adjuster or short foil bridal wires. It is an extremely rare foil and worth a lot. You should save it and let the community know it exists for the next desperate need sailor. The extrusion can be cut down and the pelican striker rod fabricated to use on the 5.8NA. Nacra foils of any size just don't exist anymore.

Are those bridle foil usefull on the nacras? I only see them mountet to topcats but never to Nacras. How much is the bend of the hulls during hard upwind? -

If it were me doing this, I would measure in a couple of inches and install a pad eye to keep the geometry right for the brindle tang... you're going to put a lot of torque on that and then you're looking at open heart surgery to fix it..
Hey Phillip... been a while.... as a note, if you want to spend the money and wait a while you can order the bridal foils from NACRA Australia.. They are still a big class there

Ahh ok. I'd thought the bridle foil helps keeping the hulls straight. My consideration was the following: the load pulls that heavy on the forestay that the hulls will bend inside. -

That’s right, they allow a lower footing jib without adding stress to the hulls. -

Dump the heavy and in your case unusable bridle foil. There is a lightweight way of lowering the jib tack. You only need to modify the lowest part of the jib, like on F16 or Tornado etc., add a alu strut and eye fittings to the bows.

Hey MN3, did you calculate on the forces and do you really compare the forces from a spinnaker with pole with these comparably small rearward forces?
Probably you should do the math first .
Interesting also that you a few years ago recommended a F16 or F18 spinnaker to be used on the 5.2....

It is one thing to have a spin sprit bridal fail, a much more serious thing having a forestay bridal fail.

Lars, what is the point of having 4 bridles for the jib clew? The tension of the mast should not be taken by the lower bridles, so I don’t think it’s good idea add more of them. -

would still recommend a 5.2 use an f16 or maybe f18 spin
not sure what that has anything to do with putting forestay bridals on your bow tips

an f-16 spin has a max size of 17.5 m²
