1500rpm drill on a 40:1 driving a ~2" drum is a line speed of 19.6 fpm. Not too shabby.

I haven't used one for a beach cat. However, I have one set-up to to lift the 1600lb keel on my Melges 24. And I set a second one up for a friends cabin in the mountains. We rigged a cable/trolley system from the parking area, to his cabin that is 100+ stairs up the hill to the deck. We used it to move furniture, a refrigerator, him when he had knee surgery, groceries, etc..
The cool part about the worm drive is that there is no clutch/brake/pawl to stop the movement. If the worm drive isn't being spun, the load is locked in place. A great safety feature when lowering heavy loads - no chance for a runaway situation. -

I couldn't find a 20v drill on Ryobi's web site. Which model # are you referring to?

Following up on the winch type.
How do you unspool the line out to the cat? Run the drill in reverse for 2 minutes? I like the worm drive but that kills it for me.

True!
I am brainstorming up a way in my backyard to use my main 8:1 with my slow ass HF winch to pull in my cat (on trailer) into my back yard. Will require a few more fixed anchor spots but i am playing with the idea -

My bad. It's the 18v Hammer/Drill with the side handle. The extra handle makes it easier to hold onto when you're running it in high speed mode.
