My First Cat  Bottom

  • Picked it up a few months back, then life happened and kept me away, now it's had a major service by the Nacra builder over and is ready to go, hopefully out on the water this weekend!!!

  • Very nice. I've got my first two cats but haven't gotten one on the water yet. The Hobie should be ready this week though. I'm down to installing battens and trimming the main and jib sheets.

  • Picked up my firstie last fall. (N 5.7)
Been Patiently working on tuning it up until this last weekend.
Father’s Day wish come true :)
    You’re gonna have a blast!
    5.8 is a bad boy!
  • 5.8 NA. Very nice. Enjoy.
  • Interesting first sail, 10 knots to 14 knots with gusts up to 17 knots, sun shining, a few issues, a few lessons, but over all a good day, and plenty of action! She's bloody fast, certainly a lot faster than I was expecting, i was warned, but kinda shrugged it off a bit ;)

  • Awesome. We had our first sail on the H16 today as well. 8-10kts and seemed blazing compared to the Snarks. I have a few other projects in the front of the queue and it will be time to get the SC17 going.

  • 2nd time out on Sunday, 15-20knts, glides through/above the water, sits a lot higher on the water than the H16's.

2nd capsize, a) at least i know we can right it ;) b) definitely can't right it on my own (without a bag/pole) c) gybing in 20 knts, on the 2nd day of sailing, probably not wise!

Trying to get to the mark, we were too far downwind, wanted to tack, but had another boat coming up on our windward side (Mrs is my crew).
Me: Going to gybe and come back around behind this other cat
    Mrs: Ok
    Me: Ready to gybe?
    Mrs: ahhh ok
    Me: Gybing
Mrs: where do i go? *woosh, splash*

Needless to say, we got wet ;)

  • Just from looking at the pixs: when your driving hard don't be shy to run the bow deeper in the water. Unlike the Hobie 16, these boats drive bow down. Nice BOAT!
  • When gybing in stronger wind, (or even lighter for that matter), don’t let the sail/traveller do its own thing. Grab the lines just below the sail & swing the system through the wind. It will help prevent a violent change.
Also , helps to sheetin as you are turning, so the sail does not have a large arc to move in. This prevents the sail slamming across the boat, into full power position.
Of course you have to be also mindful of how far you steer the boat. As you discovered, in 20kts, there’s a lot of sq ft to catch the wind.

What's the big deal about driving a H16 hull into the water?

you didn't pitch pole - you sunk. :)
  • I was pleased that we didn't sink. Between the gaping holes and the air bubbling out I thought we would. The foam core, plus the huge hunk of foam between the pylons kept it afloat.

The 5.8 is a fantastic. boat. You'll enjoy it. One trick jybing in breeze, send it at full speed. The faster you are going when you jybe, the less "bang" there is on the back side. I know it sounds weird, but think about the apparent wind. You will learn the timing on when to grab the mainsheet and fling it over. After a while, it will become second nature.
