I have purchased three sail bags. And one really nice XL righting bag that that rights my Hobie 21SE fast.

    All with great quality. icon_wink

    may work
may not survive a season or 2 tied up on my salt blaster/ sun catcher of a boat
would rather spend the money on a known brand that will be there in 2 years or 8 years when i need it vs some cheap version - ymmv
  • I don't have a righting bag yet. I'm trying to decide if I want to try the Amazon one or make one. I have some leftover hovercraft skirt fabric I could use.

  • We have used the large Colorado bag for years and it is holding up well. Just recently added a 4:1 system
for the big cat. Murrays also sells bags.

  • You can right the 21 foot cat with ease?
    using a Colorado bag?
Can you describe the process you use?

When I realized I was unable to right my boat solo, I bought this bag for $18 and a 4:1 block set at my local marine store for $70. It lives in a small dry bag on the tramp where it stays clean, dry, salt free, and ready for my next capsize. I've only used it once in very rough conditions and it worked flawlessly. I tied the handles together as a lifting point and a line to the bottom of the bag for easy emptying. The plastic hoop in the top held it open for easy filling and its capacity was more than enough to right the boat with very little effort.
The Murray's bag seems too big and the handles too long, but I'm sure its been well tested and works fine.
Sadly this "leaf bag" is no longer available through amazon but I'm sure there's something similar available.
I did not look at the joy rider video so I don't know what he's using.

The ad lists the maximum weight capacity at 110 pounds, which is only ~13 gallons, in a 72 gallon bag.
  • rungi, I use the C.S. Johnson Quick Release Lever Hyfield shroud extenders and a XL Colorado with a block and tackle and my boat rights it's...........be sure to quickly return the shroud to its retracted position. icon_wink

I have been using the murrays large bag for over 2 decades - works fine
i did have one that got "leaky" - not sure if it was abraded somehow or just the waterproofing or sticking started to fail - that bag "washed away" during righting one time (be sure to add a stopper knot to your block if you use blocks with your bag) - i purchase the same replacement

I would recommend a few land tests - see how much weight you can add before it fails
for my 5.5 i need over 150 lbs of water in the bag (estimate the weight of crew)

Theoretical maximum capacity of the 18″ x 32″ bag is 250 lbs. (THIS IS THE MURRAY's bag)
I will tell you a large % of water will never make it to "righting" as a large amount comes out the bag when the sides come together during lifting
A large amount of water will get pushed out by your back as you get under the bag and push out
  • That would seem to indicate a longer tube-like bag would be better to hold more water, or that there's more "body" to the bag (making it harder to store). I'm replacing my semi-disposable leaf bag "solution" and am thinking of fabbing one up using old billboard tarp material, then switch to a better material (poly coated cordura) once proven. Might as well shoot for what's proven to start - 18" x 32", then reinforce with poly strapping. Hold open with stiff poly rope sewn into the lip??
Other ideas? Apparently I have extra time this week and weekend due to weather...

IIRC, the bag is kinda punching bag shaped -
there is some lip sewn into exactly like a bolt rope - it doesn't really help all that much imho but i guess it is there for a reason

I also have a second bag i carry when i sail the 6.0 it was made by the previous owner of the cat, it was made with extra sumbrella type material laying around the sail loft/bimini shop he worked at - it needed more strap than he expected, i added the extra webbing - have yet to capsize the 6.0 ... we will test it one day (for sure now!)

I think you can make a good home made version if you have the right materials and tools
  • Well, got the right tools and reasonable on existing materials; plenty of correct strap materials, rings, etc.

So it's NOT cylindrical...interesting; I see that now and it explains a bunch more. I'd like to keep the thing as compact as possible and is why I don't carry my "lawn and garden righting bag", currently.

That's a good catch on the shape; the upside down punching bag would hold the water better. Maybe some weight to allow it to fill? Thinking not heavy, but rather heavier than water to allow the lip to sink.

  • I assumed MN3 was talking about a heavy bag - long and cylindrical. I've got both in the basement.

  • QuoteIIRC, the bag is kinda punching bag shaped

The Murray bag measures 18"wide by 33"long, looking at my leaf bag, they're the same dimensions but mine is 33"wide and 18"deep which makes it easier to get higher out of the water.
A good 4:1 lifting setup is important, the bag only helps if it's lifted out of the water.

Quotethere is some lip sewn into exactly like a bolt rope - it doesn't really help all that much imho but i guess it is there for a reason

That's one advantage of the ridgedity of the plastic hoop on the leaf bag, it holds it open better. Then for storage, you fold it in on itself like a bandsaw blade.
I think I lucked out on finding a well made canvas leaf bag that just happened to work well as a righting bag.

  • QuoteThat would seem to indicate a longer tube-like bag would be better to hold more water,

A shorter bag is better. A long bag ends up going into the water when you plank out. Every inch of bag in the water is an inch that is useless for righting.
For those making their own, it can be done, BUT, you must sew strapping (webbing) around the bottom & up the sides, & connect to what you’re using to lift the bag. The straps then take the load.
I would use 3” & 2 straps with strong material, 3 with water material.
I too have used the Colorado Big Bag with a 3:1., it’s over 10 years old, still looks new.
Whatever you use, it’s critical to dump the Cat on a calm day, then rig the bag/line with attachment/knots in the appropriate place.

  • Anyone know where can you buy the Colorado big bag

Also would a strap be better than a rope from the top of the dolphin striker to over the hull?
It seems like a lot of weight is placed onto the hull direly under the rope.
