  • A couple small things that will improve your boat.
Get rid of that pelican hook used to attach your mainsail blocks. It’s too long, you are losing ability to pull the foot of the sail. You don’t have the low profile blocks, & are already losing some distance.
Main sheet tension is job 1 on a boom less setup. Use a simple short 1/4” bow shackle.
Restring your tramp. Having a drum tight tramp is important. Go back to the assembly manual, item #14.
Note the photo, & how it states to “return the line through the same eyestrap”.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I tighten the tramp. How could you tell it was loose? Do you always keep the bow shackle attached to the same hole on the mainsail? It is easy to hook and move the pelican hook to different holes on the main and you cant loose it. A shackle is a lot more difficult and slower to attach but I see what your talking about. I decided not to sell the boat yet.
  • You do not have a bow shackle attached to the mainsail on your setup, you are using some sort of clip.
Once again, look at the two manuals, or photos in my album.
Factory setup is an “S” hook that drops onto the mainsail.

Many attach it directly to the upper blocks.
Your pelican hook is attaching your lower blocks to the traveller. It might make tear down 10 seconds quicker, but you’re losing the ability to go “block-to-block”. Boom lees rigs LIKE main sheet tension. Your mast does not use a rotator to control mast rotation, the mast rotated correctly automatically, BUT, it requires tension. Anything you do to give up that ability affects performance upwind.
The lower block attaches to the traveller with a short bow shackle. In this photo, Notice how I could open the “S” hook, & attach it directly to the upper blocks. I have a low profile system, a fair bit shorter than yours, so I don’t bother, but in the N5.0, (without low profile blocks), we do it to gain a bit.

  • why even bother with the hook?
  • The S-hook allows for very fast rigging compared to using the bow shackle. When raising the sail and connecting the blocks, it is much easier to capture the sail with a hook. Similarly to completely depower the sail when beaching or in the event of a capsize, just detach the blocks from the hook.

  • Or to readjust on a different hole during a tack, if conditions have changed or you will do a long downwind leg after going upwind, for instance
  • Boat is back up for sale. I am sad to be getting rid of it but am moving. It is awesome and ready to sail. Easy to sail solo and easy to step mast solo. I have been sailing every weekend and days off. The boat hauls ass even in light winds. I have sailed it in the Gulf of Mexico and bays around Florida.

Looking at your video, there is an important aspect that you can improve (for when you get a boat again after moving...): Especially on skeg boats like the 5.7 and 5.0, it's important to keep the bows on the water, for that wind it would sail much better with you sitting close to the front beam. As the wind picks up you move aft, up to trapezing behind the rear beam, with two on board you may often see the crew trapezing aft or behind the skipper (not sure on the 5.7, I have sailed the 5.0 and it was that way). With that your boat will point higher, something important to pay attention with the 5.7 and 5.0, I think that tacking is also improved.
  • The whole sale thing because you're moving is confusing to me. My boat has moved with me from Ohio to PA to CA and back to PA over the years, and gone on trips all over the Great Lakes and east coast. The 5.7 should not need re-homed if you choose to keep it.

  • a good method to learn weight distribution is to tie the tiller straight when winds are 5mph and waves are small
walk to the hull bow by the bridle and steer by walking to stern the boat piviots you can ride anywhere with no helmsman solo.
    hope this helps
    dont fall off. i

    DO NOT DO THIS
    THIS IS A FOOLS GAME
  • that is because you cant balance?
and are not comfotable on your boat.
    it teaches boat weight distribution.
  • And, the boat sails off on it's own if you fall over - so bad; real bad.
