Wanted to thank those that have contributed to this forum. The information and thoughts helped me to get my recently acquired Prindle 16 out on the water again.
We bought the boat and it had been sitting for many years. The person we bought it from had never sailed it. They had bought it hoping to fix it up but never did. No idea how long it had been sitting but after some minor refurbishment we took it out. Especially happy for those suggesting to do quick fixes and get out sailing before the summer is over. Otherwise we might still be mired in the fixing it stage.
Had planned to post a picture but don't see the ability to upload to the forum. Oh well you know what P16s look like.
It's great to hear that someone followed this sage advice. I've seen people who spent countless hours prettying boats up, painting them even, just to have a hull break in half the first time it's loaded up.
Wow!
Early hulls, etc. but much newer mainsail.
Lucky you!

That would be a bad deal to fix it up and have it break!
We fixed the mechanics of things and were looking into fixing the soft spots on the deck and one on the hull. In the end we did a quick fix with Gorilla glue on the worst spot and decided to just sail it (being gentle) to get some use out of it this year. We can always work on the hulls over the winter.
Yup early hulls. So much paint on the serial number on the hull I can't make out all the digits to see how old (It's been painted a few times).
The previous owner did say they bought a better sail. After we got it home we found the original sail (in bad condition) in a tube on the trailer. The headsail is pretty much a floppy rag that we patched with sail tape. It needs replaced but works for now.

There are used jibs in good shape here on thebeachcats. Try pbegle - he used to be a Prindle dealer and has handled used parts for quite a while. He retired a bit ago but may still have or know of a P16 jib.

An update on this boat. We now have it at our dock that has very shallow water, but it connects up into some very deep and large bodies of water.
We expect we will sail a lot more if we can just raise the sails and go. However with our shallow area we have to time it with the tides as at low tide the boat is on the ground. We took it out last night though there was hardly any wind at all (we call it lazy river sailing as it feels like floating down a lazy river). Was good to remember how to rig everything and test how shallow of water we could leave the dock in. All went well except on the way back one of the Pintle pins fell out of the rudder. oops. Will try and fix that today so we can go out over memorial day weekend.
