New F16 Class Catamaran from G-Cat

Added by Anonymous on Feb 13, 2006 - 11:10 AM
Hans Geissler introduces his new G-Cat F16 at the Tradewinds Regatta.

There are Catamarans and then there is the G-Cat. Designed and built by Hans Geissler, this catamaran is known as a vessel of unique, if not revolutionary design. The hulls, being its most unusual features, are symmetric and use no dagger-boards. Leeway is resisted by a its deep-V lateral surface coupled to deep rudder blades which prevents leeward drift and actually causes lift via their low profile and hydrodynamic shape below the waters surface.

And now, after nearly ten years, Hans Geissler has resurrected his legendary G-Cat Catamarans. After 2000 G-Cats he built until 1994 this is the first boat not built by himself but by Vectorworks Marine in Titusville, Fl. The new line takes the form of the Formula 16 High Tech racing version, with a 28’ mast and spinnaker, and a family and rental fleet version with 24’ boomless mast for casual sailing. In addition, the new and improved G-Cat 36 will be introduced, with the first model being a Power Cat that will sleep 5-6 comfortably, and a sailing model with similar accommodations. There will be a full line of options available for your comfort and safety. This represents the resurrection of the G-Cat Catamarans the first production in almost 10 years.

Stuart Gummer and Gillian Power (GBR) Win the 2005 Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta

Added by damonAdmin on Nov 14, 2005 - 03:33 PM
Aruba, November 11th 2005 On Friday, Stuart Gummer and Gillian Power (GBR) won officially the 15th Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta. Although the 2005 victory was already a fact, the British winners sailed the very last Aruba Bank Race as well and finished as first F18 in fourth position overall. Eduard Zanen and Mischa Heemskerk (NED) are second best this year, followed by Richard Allen and Simon Farren (GBR).

Stuart Gummer carried a little camera on top of his cap during their champion’s race. Gummer: "That is fun. We have produced a lot of footage this week, which we will use for a report on the 15th Aruba Regatta." The end of the racing was a relief for Gummer: "I have been ill for the last two days, so I am happy that it is over now." Although it seemed to be an easy victory, it was obviously not that easy. Power: "We had to sail hard for it. Competing on handicap means that you never know how you did, until the prize giving in the evening." Last year, Gummer and Power had a terrible regatta, as their Spitfire crashed in a collision, so they had to make up for that and they did.

Big smile for runners up

"Every day, I have come off the boat with a big smile", said Mischa Heemskerk after the last race. "The conditions have been great and we enjoyed the sailing very much." He and his occasional skipper Eduard Zanen became second best. Heemskerk: "We are happy with the result, since we are the first Tornado and we know it is hard to beat the F18’s on handicap. We did well in comparison to other Tornado teams and so did Stuart and Gillian. They were very fast and sailed a good competition." Heemskerk will fly directly to Miami / USA for a training session on the olympic Tornado with his skipper Koen de Koning. They are aiming for the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing. Marcus Lynch (GBR), crewing for James Power, has also aspirations for the Olympics in London in 2012. Back home, he will participate at the F18 Olympic Sailing Camp with Christopher Rashely.

Dart 18 Beats All the High Tech Beachcats at Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta

Gummer and Power (GBR) dominate fleet. On Monday November 7th 2005 in race five of the Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta, Sybrand Treffers and Tjitske Stoel (NED) beat all high tech catamarans on their Dart 18. They won the so called Golgate Race on handicap, before favourite Tornado and Formula 18 teams. With the traditional offshore wind of 12 to 15 knots, the three scheduled races could be sailed today. Stuart Gummer and Gillian Power (F18, GBR) are still in a comfortable lead with seventeen points. The competition between number two up to four is tied. All competitors are pushing the boats hard, so there is some exciting action on the Caribbean Sea.

Race three: "We are not the only idiots"

In the morning, many competitors sailed extra miles in race three, Patria Race. After the second triangle of the course, they were supposed to go downwind and finish upwind. Those who made a mistake, did a complete lap before they went up to the finish line. Eduard Zanen and Mischa Heemskerk (Tornado, NED) learned from their miscalculation yesterday and took the bullet, followed by Stuart Gummer/Gillian Power (F18, GBR) and Jurgen Kerstens/Paul Smissaert (F18, NED). Heemskerk looked confused when he returned to the beach: "We might have a discussion again." At that moment John Moret also arrived. "Ah, that is John and if one person is always right, it is him, so we won." Moret and Jannink finished second and got a fourth position after calculation (on handicap). Gerard Loos and Ruurd van Wieren (last year’s winner) were second at the last bottom mark. Van Wieren: "We sailed port tack and could not see Mischa. We thought that he did not cross the line and we were pretty sure that we had to sail another lap." His father Gerben van Wieren shakes his head: "Well, I will give him a count frame for Sint Nicolas." Richard Allen and Simon Farren followed their example and completed an extra round as well. Allen: "It’s a shame. Never mind, we are not the only idiots."

Catamaran Sailors Win ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards

Ellen MacArthur, Fernando Echavarri Erasun & Anton Paz Blanco flying high

November 8, 2005 The International Sailing Federation and Rolex have announced Dame Ellen MACARTHUR of Great Britain and Tornado World Champions Fernando ECHAVARRI ERASUN and Antón PAZ BLANCO of Spain as winners of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards 2005.

At an Awards Ceremony tonight in Singapore, the three sailors were honoured for their outstanding sailing achievements between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005, when MacArthur completed her record-breaking solo sprint around the world in her maxi-trimaran B&Q and Echavarri and Paz were crowned Tornado World and European Champions after a string of outstanding results.

Tornado sailors Fernando Echavarri Erasun and Antón Paz Blanco continued in 2005 where they left off the previous year and have enjoyed an extraordinary 12 months, starting with victory at the ISAF Grade 2 Barcelona Olympic Sailing Week in March where they won five of the nine races. In May, they took the gold medal at the ISAF Grade 1 Holland Regatta then followed it up the following month by winning the ISAF Grade W Tornado World Championship.

In August, they reinforced their credentials as the most exciting talent on the Tornado circuit by adding the European Championship title to their portfolio and as a result accumulated more points to boost their ISAF World Ranking position. Through the nomination period they climbed steadily to the top spot, making it theirs on 29 June.

Footnote: Congratulations! Note that all three winners sailed multihulls this year!

Allied Pickfords Hobie Asian Championships - Oct. 7-8-9th '05 - Race Results

Added by Anonymous on Oct 12, 2005 - 04:46 AM
**Day 1 - Oct. 7th 2005**

After an 11th hour entrant at last night’s registration party at Dublin Jack’s, a total of 47 Hobie Cats, comprising 7 home based Hobie Tigers and 40 Hobie 16’s, had signed up for the first ever Hobie Asian Championship.

This event follows on from 11 consecutive years of the Club’s Hobie Asian Classic and has attracted this year visiting teams from an impressive 10 nations besides the 32 locally based entrants.

This morning at 10:00 hrs Commodore Nigel Harris welcomed the competitors to Tai Tam Beach on behalf of the main sponsors, Allied Pickfords, before handing the proceedings over to the Principle Race Officer Jerry Rollin who had flown in from Manila the day before to officiate over events on the water.

A total of 44 boats took to the water for today’s 3 back to back races. We presume 3 local teams were unable to take the day off work but we look forward to them joining the fray tomorrow morning.

Formula 18 West Coast Championships

I wanted to talk about the weekends regatta but first I would like to point out that there seems to be an increasing understanding that since the yacht clubs are running more regattas these days for multihulls there are more yacht club members in our ranks. For example 8 of the 11 entries in the Formula 18 event are members of yacht clubs. There are also sailing associations that are worth looking into if there is a monetary concern. Pick one that is a member of the Southern California Yachting Association. This will open up even more events to multihulls.

This weekends regatta started off with a threat of a high pressure system hanging over or near the Long Beach event. That would not be good for the typically good conditions that most people come to the event for. That high pressure system either did not fully materialize or went away somewhere.

The noon start saw about 5 MPH of breeze and most of the boats made it to the starting line on time. Dave Sparkuhl, sailing with Karen Christensen, was giving lessons to the Formula 18 group on how to sail in that light breeze. He took the lead and kept finding ways to increase boat lengths to finish in a comfortable first. Followed by Steve Leo then Jeff Petron.
