Just a reminder, August 30, 2003, this Saturday is the grand reopening of Hobie Beach in Oxnard, California. Come out and support the efforts of the Channel Islands Catamaran and Dinghy Association.

Bring your catamaran, your friends, and your barbeque and join the fun. If you don't want to cook out there is plenty of food within walking distance of the beach. For more information see the Hobie Beach Announcement

Bench Seats (wings) now available for the Hobie 16 catamaran.

Added by damonAdmin on Aug 11, 2003 - 11:31 PM
Catamaran Bench Seats for the Hobie 16, isn't it about time!

New on the market from Sit 'n' Sail, catamaran benches for the Hobie 16. These are "Bench Seats" that you sit on; they attach to your trampoline frame using our supplied stainless steel bracket hardware. We have field tested these products for about one year, and they are rock-solid. This is a legitimate product made by a Hobie enthusiast for other Hobie enthusiasts to enjoy. They are not available anywhere else, inside or outside of the U.S. Go ahead, just try to find some. We are a new company, Sit 'n' Sail, and we'd like to promote our revolutionary new product for the popular Hobie 16 market. It's hard to believe that no one made these Bench Seats until now.

Catamaran Sailing - understanding your telltales.

Added by damonAdmin on Aug 11, 2003 - 01:45 PM
How do you know if you are sailing your catamaran efficiently? One thing that can help catamaran sailors “listen” to their boat is the proper use of telltales. This article, originally published in the On The Wire Ezine for Catamaran Sailors in January 1997, is still great information for all sailors.

Juana Good Time Regatta, early registration available.

Added by damonAdmin on Aug 09, 2003 - 12:38 PM
The Juana Good Time regatta (Sept 5-7, 2003) is going to be huge fun. After only one visit is has become a permanent fixture on my calendar. Be sure and include a trip to the white sands of the Florida Panhandle in your catamaran sailing plans this year. Read about last years race, or check out the regatta announcement in the catamaran sailing calendar.

Catamaran Sailing at Hobie Beach, Oxnard, CA, needs your help.

Added by damonAdmin on Aug 04, 2003 - 12:06 AM
A local group of dedicated catamaran sailors in California are attempting to "Fight City Hall". They want to reverse years of declining public beach access in California for sailing beach catamarans from the beach as they were designed. Located only about 100 miles from the birthplace of the Hobie Cat Company, catamaran sailing in the Channel Islands Harbor area was once so common that "Hobie Beach" is the official name of the public beach in question.

You would think that sailing catamarans from a beach named "Hobie Beach" would not be a problem, but these sailors need your help. Read about the efforts of the CICDA (Channel Islands Catamaran and Dinghy Association) to regain sanctioned beach access at Hobie Beach.

Footnote: Thanks to John and the CICDA for their efforts at bringing more catamaran sailing opportunities to California.

International Catamaran Challenge Trophy

International Catamaran Challenge Trophy:
Olympic Tornado Sailor John Lovell Ups the Ante

NEWPORT, R.I. (July 25, 2003) -- The International Catamaran Challenge Trophy’s (ICCT) heat got turned up another notch when U.S. Olympic Tornado sailor and five-time Tornado National Champion John Lovell of New Orleans showed up earlier this month to compete in the F-18HT class at Sail Newport’s 2003 Newport (RI) Regatta presented by Volkswagen. While in the City-By-the-Sea, Lovell confirmed his plans to return to Newport this September 28-October 3 to sail the fast, high-tech F-18HT catamarans again—in the much anticipated ICCT, better known as "The Little America’s Cup." He also proved he would be a serious threat by showing how unstoppable he was in a boat he’d never tried before.

Rough Day on Santa Monica Bay

Added by damonAdmin on Jul 17, 2003 - 01:57 PM
It has been a tough month for me and yesterday's adventure was hopefully the peak of my excitement for the month.

At June's end I had a great trip in the Channel Islands National Park with my crew, Bill Mattson.  We sailed Whisk (my Mystere 6.0 catamaran) for four days, covering 140 nautical miles and visited a lot of places that we had not yet seen.  We hit a superb weather window that occurred as the "June Gloom" lifted and light to moderate winds blessed our days of sunshine and calm seas. July was off to a bang for me as I toured the West Coast by car and saw a spectacular fireworks show in Seattle.  On the way back home, I took a jet boat ride on the Rogue River in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Footnote: Be sure and read the rest of Gary's account of his catamaran sailing adventures in the Pacific Ocean. Please note that Gary is an exceptionally well prepared and experienced catamaran sailor, don't try this at home!

Typhoon International Scottish National Championships

Added by Cats_in_Scotland on Jul 14, 2003 - 11:39 AM
Royal Findhorn Yacht Club 12th & 13th July 2003.

The promise of good weather encouraged twenty catamarans to travel North to Findhorn for the Typhoon National Championships. The fleet consisted of Hurricanes, Hobie 16’s, Stealth’s, a Tornado, Spitfire & Dart 15 including a number of new faces. Considering travelling times of up to seven hours for some, an excellent turnout for the most Northerly catamaran racing event in the UK.

After battling the tide race at the narrows to get to the race area in the Moray Firth, three races were sailed on the Saturday on a Windward Leeward course in winds building from Force two to a strong five by the end of play.
