Aruba, November 11th 2003 – The top ten competition of this year’s Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta is strong. On Tuesday November 11th 2003, the gap between the numbers one and two overall decreased to one point. The British team Sunnucks/Self is still leading, followed by the Dutch Formula 18 sailors Larsen/Pols and Graat/Koene.
After breakfast in seabreeze, the competitors had to wait for wind. At half past ten, the postponement flag was taken down and the fleet left the beach for the starting line. Due to light winds, the course was short, but it still took small boats a long time to get around in the burning sun. Two Inter 20 teams, Breur/Buyse and Deutekom/De Vries, from the Netherlands were in the lead. They managed to stand the heat of the British Tornado’s and finished in the first and second position, followed by Sunnucks/Self. Team Larsen/Pols stayed close and got a third place on rating after the two Nacra’s Inter 20. Sunnucks: “Gunnar is very good. He’s always there. I think he will win.”

Aruba, November 10th 2003 – On Monday November 10th 2003, the British team Sunnucks/Self moved into the overall lead of the Aruba Heineken Catamaran Regatta. The Dutch Formula 18 teams Larsen/Pols and Graat/Koene claimed the second and third position overall. Due to light winds, the race committee had to shorten the two races of today.
Today’s first race started with light wind conditions. After a general recall the fleet started correctly at the second signal. The first upwind lap was nerve-racking with lots of wind shifts. While sailing downwind the wind direction shifted about 180 degrees. As a result, the spinnakers were taken down and the race committee decided to let the teams finish after rounding the first gate. The British couple Julia and Ashly Machin, sailing a Hurricane 5.9, had a good race, which resulted in a second place on rating. Yesterday’s leaders, Richard Allen and Stuart Gummer, sailed a dramatic race. After a good start, they ended up in a windless part of the course. A 37th position was the result.

Here's a first person account of solo Hobie 16 catamaran sailing from the Gold Cup Regatta that was sailed Nov. 8-9, on Lake Meade, NV.
I counted 10 Hobie 16 catamarans at the Gold Cup on Lake Mead this past weekend. While there was no wind for sailboat racing on Saturday, Sunday was awesome.

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 3, 2003) - The sight of five 12-Metres sailing up Narragansett Bay would be impressive any day of the week. Today, however, the 12s seemingly ushered in the breeze that had kept competitors waiting under a postponement flag for the concluding matches of the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy (ICCT). For the first time since 1976, it would come down to the final match in this best four-out-of-seven finals before the champagne was uncorked to spray the winners and award "The Little America's Cup" for the 23rd time since the event was created in 1961.
Footnote: Congratulations to catamaran sailors Lovell and Ogletree for retaining the cup for the USA.

DEFENDERS AND CHALLENGERS MIX IT UP
NEWPORT, R.I. (October 2, 2003) - While the temperatures dropped on Narragansett Bay, action on the race course heated up as competition for the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy (ICCT) resumed today after yesterday's planned lay day. The Challenger (Italy's Daniele Saragoni and crew Teo Di Battista, representing Club Nautico Rimini) and the Defender (John Lovell of New Orleans, La., and crew Charlie Ogletree of Houston, Texas, representing Southern Yacht Club) faced each other on a windward-leeward course (three times around) for three matches in breeze upwards of 23 knots with temperatures hovering in the low 60s. It was "rugged going," according to ICCT Trustee John Dawson of Sea Cliff Yacht Club, organizers of the event, "especially for those who went swimming."

Seventy five catamaran sailboats attended the Catfight IV catamaran regatta on the shores of Lake Michigan. Cat Sailors arriving on Thursday saw big wind during the day . This was a precursor of things to come. As usual, the beach organization was spot on. We arrived late Thursday to find most sailors already set up and catamarans lining the beach. The regatta had started without us!

NEWPORT, R.I. (September 30, 2003) - Plenty of breeze and plenty of action were on tap for today's final races to conclude the elimination series for the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy (ICCT). The sight of F18HTs flying along Narragansett Bay was in stark contrast to their ability to seemingly stop and start on a dime. Even veteran race committee member Pam Kirk (Portsmouth, R.I.) couldn't get over the speed with which these catamarans can accelerate. "I was counting down to the start and there were no boats in my peripheral vision at four seconds," said Kirk. "I kept thinking 'do they know we're starting, do they know we're starting,' and then bam, they flew past me from behind."

DEFENDERS AND CHALLENGERS SETTLE DOWN TO BUSINESS
NEWPORT, R.I. (September 29, 2003) - Not even a slightly late sea breeze could detract from the spectacular fall day that greeted the three Italian and four American teams who are competing in the elimination series for the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy (ICCT) being sailed on Narragansett Bay. The 23rd running of "The Little America's Cup" got underway yesterday with the completion of four flights in the elimination series.

The Juana Good Time regatta (Sept 5-7, 2003) is going to be huge fun. After only one visit is has become a permanent fixture on my calendar. Be sure and include a trip to the white sands of the Florida Panhandle in your catamaran sailing plans this year.
