Malibu Outrigger Old and Updated
Various pics of Malibu Outrigger, including recent rendition. Class is, essentially defunct as racing class, but a number of boats from 50s and 60s (wood) are still sailing.
The little boat is awaiting a hardware repair and near wet.
Boat was often home built to specs and the plans are still available. (This author decided to build a version using cast-off Hobie cat hulls (18/16)with carbon/AL spars.)
There are quite a number of catamarans proas and/or outriggers based on Warren Seaman's original design. It was designed to sail off Malibu's beach into the surf. It did it so well, that the MO was once "the" boat to sail in that area and was one of the ideas that got the Hobie 16 going in Hobie Alter's head.
The boat remains a highly satisfying and fast multihull sailboat and a few are still sailing Pacific waters. Original specs were LOA 19, BOA 12, LWL 18, SA 200 and minimum weight was 350.
