Random orbital sander and lots of 120 grit paper. This grit eats the old paint and gelcoat fast enough, but doesn't leave problematic swirl marks for later steps. It also provides substantial tooth for the epoxy primers that will be used later.

I have used the 1/4 HP grinder with a wire wheel on both aluminum and the stainless parts. I have also soaked bolts in a product called CLR that has been helpful at cleaning up the scale and some of the oxidization.

80 grit garnet is what I'm using with the sandblaster and my tests show this works really well. It only cleans out the loose or oxidized aluminum and doesn't want to eat up the aluminum itself. A little bit of this stuff goes a long way. I bought a 55 lb.
