Rounding Cape Hatteras
5 teams launched the inaugural Worrell 1000 1976. My partner, Peter Guthrie maintained the lead as far as Nags Head, N.C. We were way ahead of Mike Worrell while the other teams dropped out. We decided to stop at the pier at Nags Head for a few beers and when we saw the sail coming up on the horizon we launched into the heavy surf which caused our cat to tumble and break apart. Sadly we didn't finish, but at the celebration at the Worrell Brothers restaurant we were still acknowledged for almost completing the race and giving us a beautiful brass plaque.
