Several of you guys have encouraged me to learn to splice, despite my reluctance(old dog, new tricks). With 3 high performance cats, it'd certainly save me money. So anyone want to recommend the most current/easy to follow book or DVD on the subject? I'm mostly interested in 12 strand eyesplices, tapered sheets(stripped cover,12 strand to double braid) and split tail fabrication. Which tools will I need?
Thanks! And thanks for the continuing encouragementand advice.

Dave

Just get the Samson line splicing kit and Samson's book on splicing.
Samson's website also has free instructions which are easy to follow.

Totally agree with the Samson website and their splicing book recommendation. New England Ropes website has some splicing instructions as well. Also, consider the Swedish Fid kit.

The downloads look great! Where can I get Samson's book? Samson's splice kit or the Swedish hardware?

Learning is to be measured in how many beers it takes to get the spliced accomplished. As in your first taper might be a 4-beer taper and your next might only be a two-beer taper.

Here's the address of the New England Ropes Splicing guide.

http://www.neropes.com/SplicingGuideChoice.aspx

Their Brummel Splice fo 12 strand is beautiful. Some call it the Moebius Eye. For me it magically appears as I stumble through the directions...great fun.

Does anyone know the best way to make tapered sheets with a tail?

Regards
Chet

OK, I'm on it. Got the splice kit ordered, downloaded the appropriate directions from Samson, guess I gotta sit down and pay attention. I'll keep you posted.....
To do a tapered spin hlyd or mainsheet, can a 12 strand be spliced to a double braid, or is the best route to strip the cover off a double braid? I tried a 12 strand with a cover added for a spin hlyd, but didn't care for it much.
Best source for a spool of 12 strand? Anyone favor dyneema vs vectran for easy splicing?
Thanks guys!
