[#25371]

well i was out today packing the wheel bearings on my hobie 16 and a motorcycle came driving down my street pretty slow looking at my boat, well then he drove up in my driveway so i went over to greet him. He asked me if i was into sailing and if that was my hobie. After a little talking about my boat and his bike he asked me if i knew anyone that would want a prindle 16 i told him i would keep my ears open if i heard anything i would give him a call, so he handed me his card and said

If you want it come get it

I said

for free?

and he said yes now im thinking whats the deal! so he gave me his address and I finished up what i was doing and headed over. the whole way over i was thinking this was to good to be true.

Well I arrived at his house. let me set the seen in his drive way a zo6 corvette, a 70's model caddy fully restored, a 19 or 20 foot bass boat, harley soft tail, inside his barn was a 20 something cuddy cabin boat.

he introduced me to his wife and led me to the back to show me the boat. There it was a 1981 prindle 16 that looked like it was only a couple years old we he told me that he bought it new in '81 and that he had kept it in his barn until last nov. when he got his son that bass boat for a bday present and they needed a place for it. the trailer has no rust, the tramp is a little faded but other than that its great so we pulled the wheels off and im going to go get a couple new tries they were dry rotted then go get it tomorrow. pics to follow

Here is an idea, how about paying it forward! It looks like your are in North Carolina. Why not donate the 16 to Special Olympics, NC. Our yact club here in Mississippi just hosted the Special Olympics Regional Regatta last weekend. The sailboat used......(drum roll) Hobie 16. BTW, it would also provide you with a tax write off. Just a thought.

Trey gave a bunch of his stuff from his used inventory to the special olympics - they are definitely a worthy cause to give a boat to.

I've only crewed on a P16 once, but I love the boat. Has lots of buoyancy, and is much more comfortable on your feet when trapping out than the Hobie.

I think you are under-estimating yourself. With practice and extra long lines... you can sail 2 at the same time!

So, are the satellite dishes in the pic used for a really high tech GPS? 😉

Each boat has it's +/-'s

The P16 sounds more complete though. If it happened to me, I'd donate the H16, but that's just me.

You obviously have good karma, hence the free P16!!

Im going to look for someplace to donate it, it needs a little work not much though. my wife and i talk it over were thinking about putting it for sale for what we have in it. The best part is the guy told me he'll take me out to show me the basics

I went down to Ocean Springs with the NC Special Olympics sailing team and helped run the regatta. It really was great seeing 25 teams from the southeast out on H16s zipping around in 5-15 kts steady breeze. Even the competitors who capsized enjoyed themselves. One athlete said

it was better than a rollercoaster ride!

If you want sailing instruction, my wife Joleen is running a

catamaran sailing

class this weekend at Lake Townsend near Greensboro. We'd be happy to have you. We race Isotopes with two clubs in the area and can put you in touch with them if you'd like.

Regards,
Eric
