Throwing Out a Crazy Idea
What do you think.., all input welcome.
This coming year on the North Coast of USA there will be a huge celebration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, where Commodore Hazard Perry met and defeated the British Navy in the famous battle of Lake Erie.
There will be 18 tall ships at harbors around Lake Erie and Put-in-Bay, there will be Navy and Coast Guard armadas all over the place. They have already placed a memorial buoy at the site of the battle, and of course, PIB has the Perry Monument, the 2nd largest of its kind in the world and a Peace Memorial between US and Canada.
There will be a re-enactment of the battle.
There will be fireworks and all sorts of activities. Just look at the Perry Group site and see the great pix: this past year they lined the entire shoreline of the harbor with glowing light canistars.., it was awesome.
I believe the Perry Group,< http://www.theperrygroup.org/ > our local organization, has a budget of $600,000 for the Labor Day Weekend.
PIB will be flooded with boats, Navy, CG, tourists. This is an island that has 2500 island residents and 25,000 daily visiting tourists that enjoy the shopping, the wineries, the night clubs/entertainment, the fishing, and many, many other sources of entertainment.
During or around this time, and I believe the same year as the Americas Cup, how about something like the Mini-Americas Cup, sailed on a short course in front or near the front in the harbor of the Perry Monument. And how about we make it a professional event, with an entry fee and purse to attract the very best cat sailors around. The course would be small, so Waves would be the boat of choice to keep it a multihull event.
One suggestion was to have the Waves equiped with Hooters (roller furling spinnakers) similar to the Americas Cup Boats.
We would launch from the PIBYC.
So, toss this around a bit and let your ideas and creativity run amok.
Meanwhile, take a tour of the island in a golf cart (preferred transportation on the island):

Grew up on Lake Erie, and Bayweek and Jr. Bay (bot coaching and sailing) were always the best regattas of the season. The area in front of the monument is probably big enough for higher-tech boats, we hosted an event during the ACWS in Newport that had races that were 12 minutes long for an 18 boat fleet! If the event were in F18s, I would definitely consider bringing our boat. An event in waves would still be very cool, but not sure I would make the trip home from Boston for that. Either way, I really hope it happens!
Area is too small for high-tech, high-speed boats
That's kind-a the point of all the Extreme 40 and America's Cup races...course too small, too much sail, too many boats, too many maneuvers - makes for a lot of mistakes, lead changes, and excitement.

You got me back with this one.

It was partially a response to the direction the comments above were headed, and an attempt at humor. Obviously, a failed attempt this morning...

I was joking too (see second quote).
Waves came as a natural thought, inasmuch as we have 15 racing in our fleet. The Hooter idea would make it much more exciting, although there would be much closer racing without -- Everyone sailing Waves have gotten so close that anyone can win a race anytime.. , no one has been dominating.
And I suppose F18 or F16 would work in front of the monument.
As Joe Biden said,
... this is a big freaking deal!
