Hi!
I have recently bought a smartphone with a GPS and a compass, but the above mentioned smartphone has Android installed. My previous phone was with Windows Mobile and there would be no problem finding required software. But for Android there is no such a library of programs as for Windows Mobile. Are you able to recommend me a good navigation programs for Android? Of course, excluding the car navigation apps.

Navionics Boating App would be a good starting point. The web interface is nice for planning: https://webapp.navionics.com/
Then there's always something like a smart watch that syncs to your phone with the GPS and compass built into the watch. Not good for mapping, but waypoints, speed and basic navigation and recording seems to work decent - not wonderful, but good enough. That way I don't risk my phone.

p.s. my boating app and watch is Garmin also; mostly because it's water friendly and not touch screen (5 buttons).

I have never owned anything but an iphone but i am pretty sure https://play.google.com/store/apps is the location for andriod apps
Navionics is the number one nav app by far and completely worth the subscription fee (IMO) Especially if you travel a bit and sail in locations you are unfamiliar with.

i thought it was odd he "used" a windows phone = that OS has been dead for 4 years or so but at my current job (cyber security) we still have window mobile users

For quite a number of years I've been using Marine Navigator. It uses raster charts, which I strongly prefer. I run it on an 8" android tablet, you can find a perfectly adequate on one e-bay for $100 or less. I wouldn't hesitate to run it on a phone, though the larger tablet screen is nice. Download all the charts you want for free from Uncle Sam, individually or by region, and away you go.

I've been using it for several years and we're doing our best to encourage our CRAM fleet to do it during our summer regatta season. Great teaching moments available: Does it pay to foot or pinch in x conditions? Was someone on the correct side of the course for the wind shift? How much time is lost in a tack/gybe? The answers become brutally obvious when you can replay various legs and directly compare to other sailors.
I'm concerned, though that there has been zero development put into it since around 2017 and the web playback interface is super buggy. If the owners of the app aren't interested in carrying it forward, it would be great if someone else with the skills and motivation could.
