I live in Dana Point, and can quite literally SEE the place where Hobie Alter CREATED the Hobie Cat and Surf Boards designs and built/tested his creations from my office window, AND DANA POINT/SAN CLEMENTE HAVE ZERO SPACE FOR HOBIES ON THEIR BEACHES!!!!  There once was a Fleet in the Area, but no longer - Hobie had a house on the San Clemente beach, where the Fleet resided - The ClubHouse they used is still there.
Now, all there is are just a couple of bronze sculptures at the town entrance...  Only San Diego Pacific Beach allows Hobies and other small Cats up to 18 feet to stay on the beach...  TOTAL DISGRACE!!  I have owned 3 Hobie 16s over the years, and had to sell my last one when I moved to Dana Point from Charleston because boats are not allowed in parking by the HOA in my condo, and any boatyard in the area has waiting lists that stretch over several years before you can even BUY a space!!
I would like to start a PETITON to FORCE Dana Point and adjacent San Clemente City to HONOR HOBIE ALTER by ALLOWING Hobies to be parked on the beaches.
Who agrees?

Michael I wish you luck getting to the water.

Side Note: you joined the forum in 2009 and this is your first post! Don't wait another 17 years before posting again. 😀

Unfortunately the "home of the Hobie" area of Southern California has had a big problem with beach access for many years. Once you do get on the water by maneuvering out of a busy marina there are virtually no beaches legal to land on. It's a pity.

Used to be lots of discussions here from the die-hard Dana Point and Orange County beachcat sailors about fitting small outboards to their Hobie Cats to get out of the marinas.

Some quick topics i found that mention Dana Point.

My HOA also doesn't allow boat parking, but if it's in the garage... My boat has a two piece mast and the trailer & boat are 17' long. It just fits in my 18' x 18' garage.

It's a little extra work to set it up and break it down when I sail though.

Good luck in your mission.  There are still a few places where you can beach launch leave your cat there, with a few in San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. But they don't help you in Dana Point.

@john5583

Hi, John,

I know of the PB in San Diego beach Hobies, where my Daughter and Son in Law live, but the SHAME is there is no such allowed beaching for Hobies IN THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE HOBIE CATS!!!  I've owned 3 16s and really enjoyed them for years on the East Coast, even participating (and WINNING ONE...  :-))  ) Hobie Regattas in the NY Sound - I had to sell my last one in Charleston, SC when I moved here in Dana Point, thinking that I would buy another one here...  NO PLACE TO KEEP IT!!!  I live in an HOA that does not allow boat parking, my garage is too small, and there is no place even on drydock unless you are a "good old boy" with A LOT of money...  AND no beaching allowed either - VERY DISAPPOINTING, ALAS....
