One thing I've noticed about most cruising catamarans is that their mast is very tall, especially compared to a monohull sailboat. So, here's the question:
If you are limited to a 45 foot mast height (including the stuff you put on top of a mast), how big (long) can a sailing catamaran be? Is that big enough for passage making?
