NACRA Inter 17R / F17 Rigging help
I acquired a 2001 NACRA F17 (Inter 17R) with the 30' carbon mast.  It appears to not have been set up with a main downhaul at the mast by previous owner?  On the carbon mast, the rotator arm  is at the bottom, with three small built in pulley's. The center one seems for the Main Halyard.  I assumed the outboard pulleys were once downhaul related?  Can someone familiar with this Inter 17/18 carbon mast send pics of what it should look line with the downhaul set up, or walk me thru it?  It appears all brackets were removed from mast base as well. Â
@cat-scratch The old I17 manuals are all File not found. Â I have the general assy manual but it does not show this mast setup at all.
Nacra F17 setup is identical to Nacra inter 20.
The pic you have is showing that someone modified the mast. In original configuration the mast rotator was above the boom and connected to the boom via pulley.Â
Where are you located? I have two Nacra F17, however the one next to me was modified too. I can take pics, but you probably be better trying to figure out what previous owner tried to do.Â
Im not familiar with the N17, but maybe they mast setup changed recently. Here is a snippet from the this video.
It looks like those holes are for the blocks for the downhall.
makomi, After studying your photo, I can say that the mast is not 2001 vintage. Â It was probably replaced later. The profile is different, yours is thinner. It is probably section from Nacra 17. So you probably be better trying to figure out how to rig N17.Â
Here is photo of mast base of Nacra I20, it’s identical setup to F17
Appears that a previous owner rigged the rotator to be of the more current type of rotator setup, like most of the current F18's where the rotator control line runs from a cam-cleat on the starboard hull, under the tramp, up a grommet in the centerline of the tramp, to a block on the rotator arm, and back to the tramp (same grommet) and under the tramp to a cam-cleat on the other side of the boat. In this manner, the mast rotation is adjusted to be more in relation to the apparent wind on a single tack, rather than the boom/sail as it was in older cats (1970's - early 2000's).
It depends on how you like to sail.... if you're racing, I'd keep the setup like it appears as it is now. If just day-sailing, maybe changing the rotator control to the original setup would be better for you.
You really don't have to set up the running rigging in the original form at all. You might want to make the downhaul around 8:1 or even 10:1, possibly using a cascade system, depending on how you're using the boat (racing or cruising). Even if merely daysailing, if you get caught out in a hard squall-cell that pops up unexpectedly, you'll be glad you can flatten the sail with a good, strong downhaul system.
I am in Phoenix AZ. Â I would a[p[reciate pics of what your set up looks like. Â

Where are you in Phoenix? Im in Mesa. We have a decent local fleet (www.fleet85.com) with some knowledgeable people and/or resources. There is a fleet event at Lake Roosevelt this weekend. It was going to be a multi day event with people staying overnight, but with the heat its been somewhat toned down to a show up and brave the heat if you want. Feel free to show up. I MIGHT show up on Saturday with my Nacra 20, but its only about a 10% possibility.Â
If that doesnt work, drop me a line and maybe we can work out a meeting time or something. Â
